HazMat Compliance Intern

Position Overview:

As a DigiKey Intern, you will participate in various aspects of the DigiKey department of which you are assigned. You will work alongside team members and have the opportunity to complete a capstone project which you’ll work on throughout the internship. 

Housing: Local campus housing (private room, private bath, and shared living space) is provided for interns selecting Thief River Falls as their internship home base. We are unable to provide housing for Bloomington-based internships. 

The HazMat internship is responsible for assisting with new hire orientation, being involved with relevant accident and incident investigations, assisting with monitoring and measuring activities, and ensuring compliance with applicable regulations. Interns also learn how to maintain HazMat compliance for the facility, which includes proper handling and safe disposal of hazardous materials.
Outcome will be reported out on lessons learned, new perspectives gained.

This is a hybrid role, which will require some onsite attendance. 
Hours are Monday-Friday from 7:30am - 4:00pm. On site days are Monday, Wednesdays.

 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with New Hire Orientations: (Daily) Help to conduct new hire HazMat orientations for new employees or contractors.

Accident and Incident Investigations: (Daily) Participating in investigations of accidents or incidents involving hazardous materials to determine causes and preventive measures.

Monitoring and Measurement: (Daily) Assist with the monitoring and measurement of safety processes and compliance.

HazMat Compliance: (Daily)

o   Ensure HazMat compliance for facilities, including proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials.

o Attend HazMat Council meetings to learn about what the council is responsible for and how these duties ensure compliance for the company.

o Learn the procedures for responding to a spill or unknow substance on a package/pallet.

 

Capstone Project:  

(Project) Provide suggestions for process improvement based on research conducted and/or known industry best practices.

(Project) Safe storage and handling of hazardous materials: identifying how DigiKey currently manages this and/or defining what it should be for DigiKey or how we can improve.

 

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities 

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is necessary, with good grades in sciences, especially biology and chemistry, and mathematics is a plus. Pursuing a degree with the following focus: related to environmental science, safety management, or a related field of study.

Skills: Strong knowledge of transportation regulations and compliance requirements, including DOT, EPA, and OSHA regulations. Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills. Ability to conduct safety and health training and understand safety management systems.

Experience: Previous experience in areas such as hazmat, electrical, construction, industrial, federal, commercial safety and health are beneficial.

Must be eligible to work in the US without sponsorship.

Full Microsoft Office Suite, including Teams and PowerPoint

Physical Requirements:

Generally, spend the workday sitting at a workstation and operating computer devices, such as, but not limited to keyboard, mouse, and screen 

Generally, spend the workday performing repetitive motions that involve or affect the hands, head, and other parts of your body
