2025 Summer Internship - Engineering Intern

Job Summary

The Communication Engineer/Specialist Intern will assist and be under the guidance of other engineering staff working on projects to design new microwave, wireless systems, fiber optic, and communication infrastructure.  The Engineer/Specialist will perform work in an industrial setting, including electric substations, generating stations, gas stations, gas compressor and storage stations. As well as perform field survey work for new communication systems, standards, FCC and FAA rule applications, application of RF safety rules, application of electric and gas safety rules.

 

This is a 12-week summer internship program with tentative dates from May 18 to August 8, 2025, for students entering their junior or senior year in fall 2025. The role is hybrid, based in Merrillville, IN and candidates must reside within 50 miles of Merrillville, IN to be eligible.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the Design of Wireless, Fiber Optic, and Serial Communication Systems.
  • Assist in conducting wireless path surveys in the field for microwave path design.
  • Assist in calculating Microwave path performance, propagation and reliability.
  • Assist in designing fiber optic links including performance calculations.
  • Field assessment and documentation of fiber optic network.
  • Conducts site surveys for RF safety.
  • Compiles RF safety documentation for NIPSCO sites where RF equipment installed.
  • High importance placed on the ability to express technical concepts effectively, both verbal and written.
  • High consideration for those candidates with interpersonal skills which are effective in communication with internal and external customers.
  • Desire a quick learner with the willingness to remain flexible in various work assignments.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Collecting and analyzing data and reviewing records.
  • Creating project sketches using AutoCAD and Visio.
  • Successful candidate will start in summer 2025
  • Safety consciousness required.

Required Qualifications for Position

  • Current student of an ABET accredited, four-year Engineering/Engineering Technology program.
  • Must have completed at least one year of undergraduate study.
  • Ability to work 40 hrs/week during the 12 week summer internship program in a hybrid (office/field/home) work environment.
  • Proficiency with PC applications and prefer strong skills with AutoCAD and MS Excel and Microsoft 365.
  • Authorized to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship.
  • Valid Drivers License

Salary Range:

$18.80 - $31.70
