Material Testing Engineer

Purpose of this Position:  

Working with metallurgical and mechanical engineers, the Material Testing Engineering Intern will gain hands-on experience in testing, learn about metallurgical principles, and contribute to improving efficiency and accuracy in testing procedures.​ The objective of this internship is to provide engineering students with the opportunity to develop skills in Project Management and testing in a metallurgical laboratory. 

Gain a comprehensive understanding of material testing standards, hands-on experience in conducting tests, and the opportunity to contribute to the laboratory. Through this program, interns will develop critical project management skills, learn to communicate with clients professionally and the value of customer service.​

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Vary based on project assignment and duration.  Daily roles include collaborating in a team-oriented environment with engineers and technicians and may include the tasks below:​

  • Discuss testing needs with client and compose a quotation.​
  • Receive test specimens, review the scope of work, and create work instructions for the lab.​
  • Section samples using a band saw or water jet.​
  • Machine specimens using a CNC lathe or mill.​
  • Test samples in various laboratories, including mechanical, chemical, metallurgical, cleanliness, corrosion, and/or fatigue.​
  • Author test reports and communicate results to the client.​

 

Qualifications/Education and/or Experience: 

  • Enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program (i.e., Engineering or other technically related program.
  • Complete freshman (1st) year of credits required in their degree program; provide official transcript as proof.
  • Be in good academic standing with their college or university (G.P.A. 3.0 or better is preferred).
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Critical thinking, problem-solving, and operations coordination.
  • Basic Mathematical Skills.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry a plus.
  • Able to pass a pre-employment drug screening and background check.
  • Be authorized to work in the United States. There is no sponsorship of visas during or after this program ends.

 

Physical Demands: 

  • Frequency of required physical force: Moderate.
  • Lifting requirements: lifting <50 lbs. often and > 50 lbs. on occasion.
  • Ability to stand on feet for long periods of time.

 

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • This position is relied upon heavily by other colleagues such as technicians, peers, General Manager and other positions.
  • Must adhere to, support and follow all element safety guidelines.

 

Other position Requirements:

 

This position requires access to export-controlled commodities, technical data, technology, software, and services. U.S. citizenship, U.S. legal permanent resident status, protected person status under 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3), or U.S. Government export authorization is required. Any offer of employment is contingent upon the employer obtaining the necessary export authorization, including, if required, an export license from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security, the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Defense Trade Controls, or other applicable government agency.
