Sports Media Fellow (January 2025)

Business Insider is hiring a fellow to join our Media team to write about the business of sports media.

Business Insider is for people who are driven, optimistic and always looking forward. Our mission is to inspire action through thought-provoking stories. We tell our audience what they want and need to know to improve their lives and the world with storytelling that is accessible, smart, sometimes unexpected, and always helpful. Our team members embody and uphold Business Insider’s three core values: we are all one team, we are effective, and we strive to get better every day.

The Business Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This paid role requires you to work for 40 hours a week. Fellowships can be hybrid, and we expect New York-based fellows to come into our offices at least twice per week.

Applications close on October 18.

The Role & Team:

The world of sports media is changing rapidly. This fellow will cover topics like how NIL has impacted college sports and athlete careers, the rise of US sports betting, athletes as content creators and entrepreneurs, the shifting landscape of sports TV (and sports rights) as streaming and gambling enter the equation, and more. Companies of interest range from ESPN to DraftKings.

This role reports directly to the Deputy Editor and sits on the Media desk. This role will be based in New York. Fellows are expected to come into the office at least two days per week.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pitch and publish a mix of quick hits and analysis every week
  • Identify trends in the world of sports media
  • Interview sources ranging from experts on name, image, and likeness to athletes who are building their own brands

The ideal candidate has:

  • An interest in the business of sports media and how it is changing, and in the intersection of media and tech
  • Knowledge of the major platforms and companies in the sports media ecosystem
  • A desire to understand how athletes are building their own businesses and the startups and companies helping them do it
  • A nose for identifying any developments that seem unusual and out-of-the-ordinary
  • Close attention to detail and accuracy, and clean copy

Additionally, all of our editorial fellows should have:

  • A passion for digital storytelling and voracious reading habits
  • Familiarity with digital and social media
  • The ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
  • Proofreading and copyediting skills
  • A love of Business Insider and our mission to serve readers with the information and inspiration they need in a way that’s accurate, fair, fast, and fun

Salary & Benefits:

  • Fellows are paid $20 per hour (overtime when needed and approved)
  • PTO and paid holidays
  • Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits on 91st day of employment
