Trending News Fellow (January 2025)
Business Insider is hiring a reporting fellow to cover tech and trending business news. The fellow would join a team covering the most compelling and impactful business stories of the day across a variety of industries, including tech, retail, and transportation.
Business Insider is for people who are driven, optimistic and always looking forward. Our mission is to inspire action through thought-provoking stories. We tell our audience what they want and need to know to improve their lives and the world with storytelling that is accessible, smart, sometimes unexpected, and always helpful. Our team members embody and uphold Business Insider’s three core values: we are all one team, we are effective, and we strive to get better every day.
The Business Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This paid role requires you to work for 40 hours a week. Fellowships can be hybrid, and we expect New York-based fellows to come into our offices at least twice per week.
Applications will close on October 18th.
The Role & Team:
The fellow would write about major companies, including Amazon, Meta, Tesla, Apple, and the CEOs running them. The ideal candidate closely follows the latest drama in the business world and is adept at finding creative ways into themes that are driving the conversation. Fellows may also write about business personalities, consumer trends, real estate, AI, and other innovations. They will spend their time doing meaningful work: researching, writing, pitching, and interviewing — and regular fast-turnaround original reporting. Reporters may also pitch travel assignments, though travel is not required as a condition of employment.
This role reports to our deputy editor and sits on the trending news desk.
Key Responsibilities:

- Sourcing up in assigned companies

- A broad knowledge base spanning multiple industries and company types
- A fundamental understanding of how corporations conduct business and grow
- A nose for identifying any developments that seem unusual and out-of-the-ordinary
- A willingness to conduct cold-reachouts and quick interviews to advance news
- Speed, close attention to detail and accuracy, and clean copy
- Experience with original reporting and writing (school publications are great!)
Additionally, all of our editorial fellows should have:
- A passion for digital storytelling and voracious reading habits
- Familiarity with digital and social media
- The ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
- Proofreading and copyediting skills
- A love of Business Insider and our mission to serve readers with the information and inspiration they need in a way that’s accurate, fair, fast, and fun
