Venture Capital/Startups Reporting Fellow (January 2025)

Business Insider is hiring a fellow to join our VC/Startups team.

The Business Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This role requires you to work for 40 hours a week. Fellowships can be hybrid, and we expect New York-based fellows to come into our offices at least twice per week.

The Role & Team:

Business Insider is looking for a reporting fellow interested in the fast-paced world of tech startups and venture capital. Our startups and VC team closely covers the companies, investors and entrepreneurs that are changing the world and hold them accountable.The ideal candidate enjoys writing about new technology,  how founders lead and grow their young startups and how VCs go about backing the next big unicorns, as well as enjoys shedding light on the financial mechanisms that drive the world of venture capital backed startups.The ideal reporter will embrace covering startups and venture capital with passion, have an interest in developing industry contacts, and a desire to develop intimate knowledge of the sector. They will be versatile enough to react quickly and write clearly, while still pursuing deal scoops, ambitious features and impactful investigations. They are a team player who is excited about working in an inclusive environment and getting better every day.The startups/VC reporting fellow will spend their time doing meaningful work: researching, writing, pitching, and producing features, lists, profiles — even possibly breaking news. They’ll work on stories like:How Carra Wu, a 23-year-old crypto investor, went from intern to Andreessen Horowitz partner in a yearInside the Center SF, one of the hottest spots to mingle and dance with San Francisco's tech workersA 'magic' new AI tech has become the hottest thing in Silicon Valley, VCs said. Here's why everyone's watching 'generative artificial intelligence.'

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pitch daily story ideas and work with your editor to cover compelling startup and VC stories
  • Conduct interviews with sources and pitch features, lists, and other story formats
  • Produce stories that are accurate, properly researched, error-free, and in line with Insider reporting standards and guidelines
  • Learn and become adept at Insider’s style of headline writing and Business Insider SEO practices

The ideal candidate has:

  • Experience reporting and writing
  • A curiosity about, if not interest in, the technology, startups and venture capital industry
  • A willingness and confidence to take the initiative to make calls and chase down interviews
  • A passion for digital storytelling, voracious reading habits, and familiarity with digital and social media
  • Ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced global team
  • A self-starter attitude and excellent organizational skills
  • Solid proofreading/copy editing skills and light HTML/Photoshop experience

All our editorial fellows should have:

  • A passion for digital storytelling, voracious reading habits, and familiarity with digital and social media
  • Ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced global team
  • A self-starter attitude and excellent organizational skills
  • Solid proofreading/copy editing skills and light HTML/Photoshop experience

Salary & Benefits:

  • Fellows are paid $20 per hour (overtime when needed and approved)
  • PTO and paid holidays
  • Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits on 91st day of employment

This role will be based out of the NYC or San Francisco bureaus. The VC/Startups fellow is expected to come into the office at least two days per week.
