Non-Profit Intern

Who we are: GiGi's Playhouse Detroit opened in January 2019 becoming the first and only brick and mortar location in the state to officer FREE programs and resources to individuals with Down syndrome. Our mission is to change the way the world views Down syndrome through national campaigns, educational programs, and by empowering individuals with Down syndrome, their families, and the community. All programs purposeful and progressive based on educational and therapeutic practices. Each one of our programs is designed to work on specific skill development, including speech and language, literacy, socialization and fine and gross motor skills. GiGi’s Playhouse currently has over 59 locations across North America and growing by several locations annually. 

Who we are looking for: GiGi’s Playhouse offers innovative programs for children and adults with Down syndrome, designed to develop confidence and the development of a broad variety of skills – educational, therapeutic and career development. Our Program Intern will work closely with our Program Coordinator to facilitate the implementation of all programs, and ensures they operate effectively. This includes making sure lead volunteers are equipped with the materials needed for each meeting, promotion of programs to social channels and attending and moderating programs when available. Interacting well with people at all levels of the organization is necessary - daily communication with staff, volunteers and participants with Down syndrome and their families will be needed in this role to be successful. We will set up a flexible schedule, but ideally, you would be at the playhouse while programs are going on. All interns are the face of GiGi’s Playhouse and play an essential role representing GiGi’s to families, volunteers, donors and community members. Math and Literacy tutors are always in high demand and tutoring is a great way to know our participants and their families. We require interns to take at least one student in either subject during their time at our playhouse. 

Internship Location and Dates: Most of your time will be spent at the playhouse, but there will be times when you could work virtually from home. Our playhouse is located at 19799 W. 12 Mile Road Suite L15
Southfield, Michigan 48076.  We offer 3 sessions each year. Spring Session: January – April, Summer Session: May – August, Fall Session: September-December 

*Hours will vary & will include evenings and weekend opportunities

Reports to: Program Coordinator, Kathleen Tynes

Responsibilities:

  • Assist and be actively involved with playhouse programs
  • Create weekly program promotion
  • Assist with blog content
  • Assist and be actively involved with playhouse outreach
  • Support lead volunteers during programs
  • Assist Site Coordinator with duties associated with managing the Playhouse.
  • Light office/ clerical work
  • Be a voice and a face for the playhouse and the GiGi’s network
  • Presentation of information regarding Down syndrome to multiple demographics
  • Tutor at least one participant in either Math or Literacy

Requirements:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Basic Microsoft office skills
  • Reliable transportation
  • Pass a background check
  • Complete all training before involvement in the programs can begin.
