SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The purpose of this position is to attract new engineers and to promote careers in Mechanical Rolling Stock Equipment by providing an entry point for engineers in training. Accepted candidates for the position will have the opportunity to apply their engineering skills in both the office and field, and to gain firsthand work experience in the various aspects of Rolling Stock Equipment.

 

The intern will make new contacts in the transportation industry and acquire skills and knowledge in equipment design, maintenance, and operations in addition to solving advanced technical problems and communicating with resources internally and externally (i.e. Original Equipment Manufacturers, State Partners, etc.) to meet business objectives.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Under the supervision of assigned Engineering Manager(s) the position will:

  • Assist the Rolling Stock Equipment group with equipment design and troubleshooting.
  • Develop and release of work instructions, maintenance procedures, modifications, models, drawings, and/or schematics related to Rolling Stock equipment
  • Assist the Rolling Stock Equipment group with engineering testing, inspections, and design of operating and capital maintenance planning.
  • Assist in the analysis of failure data, physical components, system design, and input from maintenance personnel to determine root cause of failures.
  • Attend office meetings, field meetings, field/equipment support onboard as necessary and conference calls.
  • Assist in providing technical, logistical, and administrative support to ensure the successful completion of assigned project tasks within scope, schedule, and budget. Receive instruction on and become familiar with Mechanical safety standards, work procedures, and operating practices.
  • Other specific work assignments may be determined as necessary

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution.
  • Must be actively pursuing an undergraduate degree in Engineering (Electrical or Process).
  • Must have at least 1 year of academic undergraduate studies completed or a sophomore status at minimum.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous heavy machinery or railroad industry experience.
  • Specific interest or desire to work in the railroad industry.
  • CAD and/or SOLIDWORKS experience.

 

COMMUNICATION AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills

 

The hourly range is $17.50 per hour - $35.00 per hour. Pay is based on factors including school year, program of study, etc. In addition, paid internships include Amtrak rail pass privileges as a part of the experience along with one (1) PTO day per academic year. 

  

Summer 2025 internship program will run from May 19th - August 8, 2025.
