Internship Title: New Equipment Engineering Intern
Department: New Equipment Engineering (NEE)
Intern will report to: Senior Engineer - NEE
Hybrid Position: Some days in the office in Chicago
Overview:
The intern will collaborate with team members to provide engineering support on New Equipment Engineering projects.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work with engineers to accomplish assigned tasks in a timely and accurate manner.
Projects the intern will work on:
- New Car Projects – Design/study freight car structure and components.
- Analytics – Analyze railcar structure and maintenance records for design improvements.
- Drawings/Models – Create drawings, sketches and models to advance projects.
- Data Administration – Review and organize railcar construction data.
Internship Goals:
- Gain an in-depth understanding of rail cars, rail car components, and rail car construction
- Gain AutoCAD and SolidWorks experience
- Learn Technical Writing
- Gain data analytics experience
- Improve presentation skills
Qualifications:
- Major(s): Mechanical Engineering
- Year in school: completed at least 1 year at an accredited college/university
- Specific course work: Statics, Strength of Materials, AutoCAD
- Proven proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
- Min GPA of 3.0

- Machine shop experience
- Welding experience
- Railroad experience
- ANSYS experience
- SolidWorks or other 3D modeling experience
- Able to work independently
- Eager to learn
- Aptitude for problem solving, critical thinking, and analytics
