The Information Technology Services Office within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a Solutions Architect (IT Architecture – Senior/Specialist) position. This position can be located in any of the following locations:
- Headquarters Office in Lacey, WA.
- Central Region Office (CRO) in Union Gap, WA.
- Eastern Region Office (ERO) in Spokane, WA.
- Northwest Region Office (NWRO) in Shoreline, WA.
Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station.
Please Note: If the final location of this position is determined to be in our Northwest Region Office (NWRO) in Shoreline, WA, there will be an additional 5% pay increase due to its location in King County. In this instance the salary range will be $8,687-$11,682 per month.
The Department of Ecology is seeking an experienced and visionary Solutions Architect to spearhead our strategic IT transformation. Based in the Enterprise Architecture Program, you will serve as the lead architect, responsible for crafting and implementing scalable, secure, and future-ready IT solutions. This role emphasizes innovation in digital modernization, cloud architecture, and seamless systems integration to advance the agency's overall mission.

Telework options for this position: This position will have flexibility of a hybrid schedule, empowering work from home and office, providing less time in traffic and shrinking your carbon footprint. This position will be eligible for up to a 90% telework schedule. Duties
What makes this role unique?
As the Senior Solutions Architect, you will design and implement secure, scalable IT solutions aligned with the Department of Ecology’s environmental mission. Leading modernization and integration efforts, you will architect cloud and SaaS solutions that streamline data flow and system compatibility across the agency. Your responsibilities will include establishing enterprise standards and best practices, ensuring cohesive IT development while fostering security and compliance. Working closely with cross-functional teams, you will provide strategic guidance on IT governance and support a culture of high-quality, user-centered solutions through mentorship and collaboration.
What you will do:
- Lead the design and development of comprehensive IT solutions that align with Ecology’s strategic goals, integrating new and existing systems for streamlined operations.
- Guide technology modernization efforts, including the migration of legacy systems to cloud-based architectures and the adoption of SaaS solutions, ensuring compliance with agency standards.
- Develop and maintain enterprise solution architecture standards to support consistency and scalability across the agency's technology initiatives.
- Design integration solutions that facilitate secure, seamless data exchange between systems, while maintaining data integrity and performance.
- Collaborate with IT management on governance and policy development, ensuring IT solutions adhere to best practices and regulatory requirements.
- Mentor and support technical teams, promoting continuous learning and adherence to architecture standards in system development and maintenance.
This position requires training to keep consistent with industry best practices. Leadership works with industry leaders to forecast changes in information technology and lists required training in this position’s yearly Performance Development Plan (PDP). Staff within this division are provided two (2) hours per week for training. It is expected that this position will take what is learned in their training and apply it to their daily work.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Years of required experience indicated below are full-time equivalent years. Full-time equivalent experience means that any experience where working hours were less than 40 hours per week will be prorated in order to meet the equivalency of full-time. We would calculate this by looking at the total hours worked per week, divide this by 40, and then multiply by the total number of months worked. Examples of the proration calculations are:
- 30 hours worked per week for 20 months: (30/40) x 20 months = 15 months full-time equivalent
- 20 hours worked per week for 12 months: (20/40) x 12 months = 6 months full-time equivalent
Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, education, and volunteer experience. See below for how you may qualify.
A total of eight (8) years of experience and/or education as described below:
- Recent Experience in one or more of the following IT disciplines: data architecture, database design, application/software development, application security architecture, or business intelligence.

Experience must include one (1) year of leading IT professionals or consulting as a technical lead and can be obtained concurrently to other professional experience listed above.
- Education: College credits or degree involving a major study in Computer Science, Information Technology (IT), Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), or closely related field, OR completion of a two (2) year accredited vocational training program in User Experience Design or related program.

Combination 2; 30-59 semester or 45-89 quarter college credits; 7 years of experience

Combination 4; 90-119 semester or 135-179 quarter college credits; 5 years of experience
Combination 5; A Bachelor's Degree; 4 years of experience
Combination 6; A Master’s Degree or higher; 3 years of experience
Desired Qualifications:

- Two or more years of experience as solution architect, lead developer, systems architect, or team lead responsible for designing and implementing new IT systems.
- Experience developing, recommending, and maintaining application development and/or solution architecture standards, IT best practices for an organization, including facilitation of diverse groups.
- Sound knowledge and skills in application integration methodologies and interoperability standards, including integration of Geographic Information Systems, Enterprise Content Management systems, and cloud-based interoperability standards.
