Medical Claims - Agricultural Insurance Intern

OBJECTIVE

Are you looking for a challenging and rewarding paid rotational internship opportunity with one of Michigan’s top ranked workplaces?  Michigan Farm Bureau Family of Companies is seeking a motivated group of students to join our team!  

 

The Medical Claims 14-Week Internship offers a comprehensive learning experience through rotations in Personal Injury Protection (PIP), Michigan Assigned Claims Plan (MACP), Workers Compensation (WC), and the PIP Litigation Unit. Interns will gain valuable insight into the medical claims process, enhance their analytical skills, and understand the legal aspects of claims management. We are looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Intern to join our team to gain hands-on experience doing purposeful work in various aspects of medical claims handling. You may also have the opportunity to attend court proceedings and participate in ride-alongs with our Special Investigations Unit.

 

Interns will receive mentorship, training, and support from experienced professionals in the medical claims field and gain networking opportunities within the insurance and legal industries. 

 

This position is hybrid, offering the flexibility to work remotely with the expectation to also work in the office.

 

The Medical Claims Intern is a part of the Agricultural Insurance Internship. The Agricultural Insurance Internship is a partnership between five different departments within Michigan Farm Bureau Family of Companies. Interns who are a part of the Agricultural Insurance Internship will get to have unique experiences in our Claims, Underwriting, Marketing, Agency and Public Policy & Commodity Division spaces. While you will be hired into one space, you will go through rotational Wednesdays, where you spend each Wednesday within one of the five departments listed in the Agricultura Insurance Internship. 

 

All summer interns will also have the opportunity to participate in the following events:

 

Intern Meet-n-Greet

Lansing Lugnuts Game

Intern Farm Visit

 

Additionally, all summer interns will participate in the Capstone Presentation. This will be a presentation to recap your summer with Michigan Farm Bureau Family of Companies, the projects you worked on and any other information regarding your internship. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Learn about the Michigan No-Fault Law and workers compensation statutes

 

Learn about MACP and its role in providing benefits to uninsured individuals

 

Assist in reviewing and processing Michigan PIP claims, MACP claims, and WC claims

 

Analyze medical records and bills

 

Communicate with insureds, claimants, employers, employees, and medical providers

 

Provide administrative support to the team

 

Collaborate with team members to investigate and resolve claims

 

Participate in meetings and discussions

 

Gain exposure to the legal aspects of medical claims

 

Understanding preparation for depositions, mediations, settlement conferences, and other court proceedings

 

Attend court proceedings to observe the litigation process

 

Participate in ride-alongs with SIU to understand investigating fraudulent claims

 

Gain an understanding of key functions through on the job training and development

 

Collaborate with department staff to contribute on various processes and projects

 

Assist department managers with day-to-day tasks and procedures

 

Undertake special assignments as instructed by department manager

 

Build relationships with department stakeholders and contribute toward company and department goals

QUALIFICATIONS

Currently enrolled in insurance or risk management courses

 

Have an interest in medical claims

 

Self-motivated, detail oriented, and willing to “Dive-in”

 

Basic knowledge of using a computer (word processing, navigation, etc…) is required

 

High understanding of technology is preferred

 

Reliable transportation

 

Ability to travel within the State of Michigan

 

Ability to dress for a professional setting

 

Dedication to learning and continuous improvement

 

Must be enrolled at a college or university and have declared a major course of study moving closer to (or working toward) graduation

 

Proven track record as an excellent team player required

 

Outstanding communication and customer service skills

 

Familiarity with computer equipment and software required to complete job functions
