Conservation Education Internship
The Potter Park Zoo Education Department is offering a limited number of stipend part-time or full-time Conservation Education Internship positions. The stipend for full-time is $1500 and the stipend for part-time is $750. The Conservation Education Internship provides a practical learning experience and knowledge of informal conservation education in a zoological setting.
Duties and tasks may include but are not limited to:
- Developing programs and/or activities under the guidance of education department staff, to be implemented by interns, staff, and volunteers for conservation education on-grounds.
- Assist in the daily operation of the Education Department including program creation, contributing to on-going projects, cataloguing, event set-up/clean-up, program delivery, and other duties as assigned.
- Assist with interdepartmental events and projects including, but not limited to, Zookambi Summer Camp, Big Zoo Lesson, Boo at the Zoo, conservation events, Zoo Nights, Wonderland of Lights, and DEAI initiatives such as FALCONERS.
- Develop and implement conservation education messaging in the form of education stations, and other on-grounds activities or lessons.
- Participate in on-grounds education throughout the Zoo including education stations, tours, and public events.
- Complete relevant online and in-person training programs and certifications.
- Please Note: Conservation Education Interns do not participate in animal husbandry, nor do they have contact with animals.
Requirements
- Hours worked during the week are flexible, but must be worked between 9am – 2pm. Some weekends will be required and hours will vary.
- Currently pursuing or recently graduated with a degree in zoology, biology, education, environmental education, conservation science or a related field preferred.
- Junior/Senior college level students preferred. Relevant experience will be considered if not pursuing a degree.
- Must enjoy working with people of all ages, ethnicities, race, gender, and backgrounds.
- Must have an interest in engaging members of the public in conservation education opportunities and place-based learning.
- Must be self-motivated, energetic, adaptable, and able to work as part of a team.
- Must pass a background check.
Further Comments
- Hours will generally be during the week. There will be some required weekend and evening events/programs.
- College credit is available; the intern is responsible for obtaining the necessary paperwork and approval from their university.
