Project Name: Technical Services Support Intern

Interns Preferred Degree: Applicants must be pursuing a bachelor’s degree. The degree may be in a variety of backgrounds and applicants are preferred to have completed no more than one or two years of classes such that the internship possibly may be renewed the following year or two. Preference is given to students with engineering or computer engineering-related degrees.

Project Description:

The general objective is to assist technical services committee managers in the development and support of railroad industry Rules and Standards. Projects may include:

  • Conducting data analysis of Umler or Car Repair Billing information to prepare pivot tables, graphs, and summaries for presentation to Technical Committees.
  • Support time studies and review of existing time standards.
  • Reviewing applications (for facility and product approval) for compliance with standards, organizing the applications when needed, and send to committees for ballot approval. 
  • Producing technical drawings for publication in AAR Rules and Standards.
  • Developing a shared online committee management information system that houses communications, minutes, calendars, actions, and applications for approval (including letters, test results, and inspections). Efforts will include a system for balloting items for approval.
  • Developing a separate shared online system to archive and internally share inspection reports.
  • Developing drafts of circulars and proposed Rules and Standards.
  • Preparing for and organizing industry meetings and conferences.
  • Working with an existing industry services provider (IIRX) to enhance existing facility approval capabilities.
  • Some clerical work in archiving and indexing critical files or publications.
  • Projects will be funded by the MxV Rail’s Technical Services Department.
  • Ensures that all duties and responsibilities are performed in a safe manner.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Primary Duties: 

  • The primary duties of an intern will be to support the technical service department through data analysis and organization, technical support to committee managers and members, organizing and tracking critical information, report preparation, and working with AAR members to increase the efficiency of technical service support. 
  • Also support testing and/or inspection of rail components or systems and the preparation of reports on the results. 

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Open to learning and living the MxV Rail values (Momentum, Insight, Teamwork, Rigor, Purpose) in all facets of the organization's work.
  • Experience in data analysis (coursework, research projects, or work experience).
  • Basic problem-solving skills and understanding of technical processes and engineering principles.
  • A strong foundation in Microsoft Office software, particularly Excel (data organization and analysis, functions, charts/plots, and basic programming).
  • Basic project management skills to move tasks forward on schedule. 
  • Ability to work on track and in a laboratory environment, taking measurements, pictures, and field notes if necessary.
  • Willingness to learn about railroad freight car components and systems and develop data analysis, literature review, multi-tasking, and strong communication & leadership skills.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • At least one year of undergraduate coursework. 
  • Coursework would include structural, materials, data science, economics, or industrial engineering. 
  • Experience using Minitab, Statistica, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Python, SharePoint, and/or MATLAB.

 

Length of Service: 

The intern’s term will be for the summer only (2025), approximately ten weeks, preferably from May to the end of July. This position is allocated for and is expected to consume one hundred percent of the intern’s work hours. There is potential for additional internships in the future and part time work throughout the year if budget allows. This position is allocated for and is expected to consume one hundred percent of the intern’s work hours. The work hours will follow a fortnight work schedule with hours of 7:00 AM – 4:30 PM, Monday through Thursday, and every other Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM.

  • Online Systems
  • Spreadsheets, pivot tables, and presentations
  • Computer drawings
  • Completed ballots
  • Successful Meetings
  • Circular and Publication Drafts
