Public Works Intern - Multiple Roles (review job description)

The City of Minneapolis is currently seeking qualified candidates to fill the following internship positions:

  • GIS Business Intern (Three positions)
  • Operations Intern (Three positions)
  • Regulatory Environmental Inter (Two positions)

The Surface Water and Sewers division of Public Works is responsible for planning, designing, operating, and maintaining the sanitary sewer and drainage systems within the City of Minneapolis

Compensation: Wages start at $21.632 hourly, $21.955 hourly for returning interns.  

 

Duration: May to August, possibility to extend through December. 

 

Hours:

• Up to 40 hours per week

• Willing to accommodate school schedules

• Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Surface Water & Sewer - GIS Business Intern

• Process data requests using prior intern developed Python GIS Scripts. Responsible for sending out maps and data to the public, contractors, and developers per data requested.

• Asset management data analytics that involves gathering and processing large data from different systems that can help refine or create different asset management tools.

• GIS Python data scripting.

• GIS data entry and editing, via reading and interpreting engineering plans and drawings.

• Other GIS tasks as assigned.

• This position is best for those with an understanding of geometric networks and topology, and basic familiarity with GIS Database Design within an esri platform. Survey or locating knowledge is beneficial. but not required.  


 

Surface Water & Sewer - Operations Intern

• Sewer asset condition assessment and reporting - Including BMP, Manhole, Catch basin, GSI, Storm and Sanitary pipes, Sustainable landscaping, Creating Maps, mapping assets using GIS, GIS online and field maps.

• Assisting in construction inspection, quantities tracking, documentation, and reporting.

• Reading plans and editing PDFs to reflect actual infrastructure conditions.

• Collection Data with R2 Trimble Units and reporting.

• ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Field Maps, and Smart Sheets knowledge is highly desired for some of these operations internships.

• All operations positions are required to work outside more than 50% of the time. Some positions require physical activity to open Sewer access points. Some work will be in active construction zones or streets with traffic. Commitment to safety is a must for all positions.   


 

Surface Water & Sewer - Regulatory Environmental Intern

• Works closely with program manager and inspectors to perform stormwater management inspections on raingardens, underground structures, and other stormwater BMPs.

• Assists with the inspection and documentation of Linear GSI (Green Stormwater Infrastructure) as a part of roadway redevelopment projects.

• Will develop an understanding of permit language regarding City Ordinances and our NPDES (National Pollution Discharge Elimination System) MS4 permit (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System), and how to enforce compliance.

• Develops data analysis and management skills, GIS and map-making techniques, and outreach and education experience to support our programs

 

Required Qualifications

All applicants must:
• Be 18 or older
• Have a valid driver’s license
• Registered for college
• Be willing to work outdoors in all types of weather
 

Preferred Qualifications:

• Computer software skills with at least 3 months of education and/or experience using ESRI ArcGIS, working with geodatabases, and/or shapefiles and editing.

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Access).

• A high level of attention to detail, the ability to do repetitive work, the ability to work independently, and a willingness to learn.

Selection Process
The selection process for this position will consist of a review of the application, resume and cover letter and then a panel interview.  Since the selection process will consist of a review of the application, resume and cover letter, it is to your advantage to be as complete and thorough on your application forms, supplemental application and other support documentation/materials as is possible. The Human Resources Department reserves the right to limit the number of person invited to interview. 
 
Background Check
The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary for certain positions with this job title. Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought. Applicants who do not sign the informed consent form will not be further considered for the position.

Drug and Alcohol Testing
All job applicants must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test once a conditional offer of employment has been made.  Applicants will be required to sign a notification and consent form prior to undergoing drug and alcohol testing.  Applicants who do not consent to undergo drug and alcohol testing will not be required to do so and the City will withdraw the conditional job offer, resulting in the job applicant no longer being considered for the position.

Eligible List Statement
The names of applicants who meet minimum qualification and who pass the screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for employment consideration.  This list will be certified to the hiring manager who may use the list to fill a vacancy of the same job title. This eligible list will expire three months after it has been established.
 
Interview Selection
The hiring authority reserves the right to determine the maximum number of candidates to interview from the established eligible list.  If the hiring authority decides to interview other than by exam score order, they may select additional people to interview based on a candidate’s education or experience related to the field, work history, or skills uniquely related to the operational needs of the position.
