Intern - Traffic and Parking, Public Works

The City of Minneapolis is currently seeking qualified candidates to fill the following internship positions: 
 

  • Traffic Intern (One Position)
  • Parking Services Interns (Two Positions)

 

The Traffic and Parking Services aims to maintain the movement of people, services and goods throughout the city across all modes of travel. The On-Street and Mobility teams are responsible for 9,500 paid on street parking spaces with 750 pay stations, regulates over 1,000 miles of curb, and oversees the multi-modal mobility program. The division as a whole also operates 13 parking ramps alongside the Impound Lot, maintains 20,000 streetlights, and holds responsibility for traffic management through mechanisms such as signs, signals and lane striping.

 

Work Location: These internships are in-person. Offices will be located at either of the following:

• Traffic Maintenance Facility, 300 Border Avenue, Minneapolis, MN

• Hawthorne Transportation Center, 33 North 9th Street Suite 100, Minneapolis, MN

 

Compensation: Wages start at $21.632 hourly, $21.955 hourly for returning interns.

Duration: May to August, possibility to extend through December. 
 

Hours:

• Up to 40 hours per week

• Willing to accommodate school schedules

• Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Traffic Intern 
• Engage in both directed and independent projects, with a focus on traffic operations, design, and data analysis.
• Perform analysis and modeling for transportation studies.
• Support the development and implementation of traffic signal timing parameters.
• Assist with drafting of infrastructure as-builts.

Parking Services Intern
• Engage in both directed and independent projects, with a focus on developing and expanding our data analysis capabilities, specifically within the realm of geographic visualization.
• Utilizing ArcGIS and/or Cartegraph asset management software, the intern will analyze and visualize varied data sets, and possess an eagerness to innovate and expand upon previous projects.
• Expect some field work, with a focus on the geolocation of assets, condition assessments and parking occupancy studies.
• Perform research within historical documents and records to assist staff with various projects and initiatives.

 

Required Qualifications

All applicants must: 

• Be 18 or older 

• Have a valid driver’s license 

• Registered for college 

• Be willing to work outdoors in all types of weather 


 

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Detail oriented with an innovative attitude.

• Computer skills: proficient in ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint). CADD or Synchro skill are a plus.

• Self-motivated candidates should have the ability to work independently

Selection Process
The selection process for this position will consist of a review of the application, resume and cover letter and then a panel interview.  Since the selection process will consist of a review of the application, resume and cover letter, it is to your advantage to be as complete and thorough on your application forms, supplemental application and other support documentation/materials as is possible. The Human Resources Department reserves the right to limit the number of person invited to interview. 
 
Background Check
The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary for certain positions with this job title. Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought. Applicants who do not sign the informed consent form will not be further considered for the position.

Drug and Alcohol Testing
All job applicants must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test once a conditional offer of employment has been made.  Applicants will be required to sign a notification and consent form prior to undergoing drug and alcohol testing.  Applicants who do not consent to undergo drug and alcohol testing will not be required to do so and the City will withdraw the conditional job offer, resulting in the job applicant no longer being considered for the position.

Eligible List Statement
The names of applicants who meet minimum qualification and who pass the screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for employment consideration.  This list will be certified to the hiring manager who may use the list to fill a vacancy of the same job title. This eligible list will expire three months after it has been established.
 
Interview Selection
The hiring authority reserves the right to determine the maximum number of candidates to interview from the established eligible list.  If the hiring authority decides to interview other than by exam score order, they may select additional people to interview based on a candidate’s education or experience related to the field, work history, or skills uniquely related to the operational needs of the position.
