NIDA Summer Research Internship

NIDA’s Office of Research Training, Diversity, and Disparities offers paid summer research internships to expose undergraduate students to the field of substance use and addiction research.  Selected students work with distinguished scientists at research institutions across the United States for eight weeks during the summer. Internships involve hands-on experiences that may include laboratory experiments, data collection, data analysis, formal courses, participation in lab meetings, patient interviews, manuscript preparation, library research, literature reviews, and more.  This effort is intended to provide opportunities for talented students, particularly those who have fewer opportunities for research experience available to them.

Eligibility:

  • Must be an undergraduate student in good standing at the time of application
  • Must be at least 18 years old by May 31, 2025
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Must be available to work full-time for eight consecutive weeks over the summer

Support Provided:

NIDA partners with Rose Li & Associates, Inc. (RLA) to manage intern payments, including:

  • $15/hour, up to a maximum of $4,800 for eight weeks
  • Up to $2,500 for housing reimbursement (additional cost reimbursement considered with documentation on a case-by-case basis)
  • Up to $500 for travel expenses (additional cost reimbursement considered with documentation on a case-by-case basis)

NIDA does not cover costs for conference attendance, meals, utilities, or household furnishings.
