Summer Environmental Internship Program
Michigan Sea Grant is seeking applicants for its 2025 Summer Environmental Internship Program.
Michigan Sea Grant’s undergraduate internship program coordinates and funds undergraduate students from an accredited community college, college, or university in Michigan to work with private businesses, local government, state and federal agencies, or environmental non-profit organizations to plan or implement environmental stewardship projects in the Great Lakes. Students can work with academic faculty if their project also involves strong partnership with an organization outside the school.
Applicants have two options when applying:
- Applicants can apply with their own project idea and a sponsor organization they are already coordinating with; or
- Applicants can apply to work on a project that was submitted by a sponsor organization. Please see the announcement for additional details about these opportunities.
Either way, applicants must contact their potential host before submitting their application. For pre-submitted projects, use the host organization contact information provided in the application guidance. In addition, projects must be based in Michigan and applicants are expected to be onsite for their projects, unless other arrangements are made with their project supervisor.
Michigan Sea Grant provides interns with a stipend of $9,000. Applicants can also apply separately for travel funding (up to $1,000) to directly support project work for situations where support is not provided by the host.
Eligible Applicants
Applicants should be enrolled undergraduate students at any level of study. Preference will be given to students who plan to pursue a career in environmental science.
Michigan Sea Grant encourages applicants from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, and individuals from economically or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds. Michigan Sea Grant is committed to diversity and multiculturalism through staff training and organizational development for employees to help them provide effective and inclusive programs for the diverse residents of Michigan’s communities.
