AmeriCorps Outdoor Science Leader

Service Description/Position Summary: The Outdoor Science Leader will develop and gather nature-based lessons and activities targeting K-5th graders. The position will run for at least 300 hours over 5 months, encompassing afterschool days and limited full days during the school year. The member-developed lessons will combine science exploration, arts and crafts, and games focused on the natural environment. Nature-based activities will fill approximately two to three hours per week during the afterschool program and three to five hours during school year full days and summer program days. Most of the remaining hours will be spent supervising students in recreation and STEAM activities, as well as maintaining the school site. The member will be involved in planning and leading outdoor science field trips during the school year full day.

 

Member Activities/Duties: 

  • Student supervision and safety: Actively monitoring students during all activities, addressing potential safety concerns, and enforcing program rules. 
  • Lesson planning and implementation: Designing age-appropriate activities and lessons that are nature-based and focused on outdoor education, also planning outdoor science field trips on full program days. 
  • Group management: Assisting with activities led by other instructors, managing student behavior, resolving conflicts, and fostering positive interactions within the group. 
  • Collaboration with staff: Working effectively with other afterschool staff to coordinate activities, share information, and ensure a cohesive program. 
  • Site Maintenance: Assisting with activity cleanup (cleaning tables, sweeping and mopping).

Preferred Skills & Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of biology, geology, and/or natural resources
  • Experience working with kindergarten through fifth grade children
