Intern - OWEF Operations

Minimum Qualifications of Education and Experience

Candidates must be enrolled in a certificate or degree program studying Boiler engineering, Industrial maintenance and mechanics, applied sciences, or a similar field. 
AND
Possess the ability to work part-time (16 hours per week) in person. This position may include evening and weekend hours. 
 
Individuals will be required to complete a pre-employment and any potential post-accident drug test as these positions are deemed safety sensitive. Regardless of Minnesota statute, marijuana and other drugs will disqualify individuals from initial and continued employment.

Regular and reliable attendance is a necessary component of job/position. Individuals required to use County vehicles and equipment must have a valid driver’s license and be free of any major traffic violations for the last three (3) years.

Nature of Work

Under direct supervision of the department supervisor, this position will work with the boilers and their related systems: feedwater, steam, condensate, turbine generation, combustion controls and related equipment. They will learn to take readings on all of the equipment and will learn what it indicates when a reading is out of range. The individual will learn characteristics of good combustion, effects of air ratios within the boiler, pollution control equipment, and MPCA regulations. The intern will learn how to maintain basic components of a boiler system and their related systems. The individual will learn preventative maintenance procedures. They will assist in the disassembly and rebuild of pumps, trouble shoot control valves and circuits, help trouble shoot hydraulic components, and help repair boiler equipment such as grating, and plenums.

Examples of Work

  • Roves and takes readings on boiler equipment.
  • Assists in starting and stopping boiler equipment.
  • Disassembles and rebuilds pumps.
  • Assists in boiler grating removal and cleaning.
  • Cleans heat exchanger piping.
  • Assists with troubleshooting boiler equipment.
  • Assists with motor and motor control replacement.
  • Assists Maintenance department with daily tasks.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of power plant theory.
  • Knowledge of basic boiler theory.
  • Knowledge of basic electricity and electrical theory.
  • Skill in the use of computers and technology.
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to assist with projects related to boiler repair, such as heavy lifting, twisting, and turning.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret regulations and policies.
  • Ability to think critically and recommend solutions to problems.
  • Ability to communicate with diverse groups of people.
