Digital Safety & Online Abuse Defense

PEN America seeks a Spring internship work with our Digital Safety and Online Abuse Defense team. Online abuse challenges livelihoods, undermines equity, and threatens free speech, and PEN’s Digital Safety team leverages research, education, and advocacy to make online spaces safer, more equitable, and more free.

The fall interns will support a range of projects, which may include: fact-checking research reports, drafting social media copy, updating training materials and our Field Manual Against Online Harassment, and/or tracking tech safety features and policy developments.

This internship will operate from our headquarters in New York City and our D.C. office on a hybrid schedule during normal business hours. Applicants needing a fully virtual arrangement are also welcome to apply and should indicate this requirement in their application. Paid internships are available and would require a commitment of 15-20 hours/week over 26 weeks.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES


The intern will work closely and collaboratively with the Digital Safety program team on research, developing advocacy strategies, and drafting website/social media content

  • Provide support for the development of new free expression resources, such as expert reports and digital tools
  • Provide support for updating of and continued outreach to promote PEN America’s Online Harassment Field Manual
  • Event planning support

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
 

  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Excellent writing skills with the ability to draft and edit research reports, memos, and social copy
  • Familiarity with social media is a plus
  • Experience with training curriculum development and implementation is a plus
  • Experience or interest in digital safety and/or press freedom is a plus
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and flexibility when working on several ongoing projects
  • Open to learning, communicative, and collaborative
