Utilities Intern

Position Objective:
The City of Fridley Public Works seeks a Utilities Intern to assist in providing for the construction, operation, maintenance and repair of the city municipal water and sewer system. Position will partner with Utility staff to perform manual labor and operate a wide variety of hand tools, machines, pumps, motors, instrumentation, and process control equipment. This position offers a flexible start date & hours while providing valuable experience and preparation for success on the start of a career pathway into Utilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform semi-skilled work under direct supervision and independently as directed. Duties include outdoor work in local climatic extremes.
- Assist in providing efficient operation and maintenance of the city’s water and sewer system.
- Assist in operation and maintenance of city water and sewer system to include water treatment plants and sewer lift stations.
- Under direct supervision, assist with inspections of water system components, lift stations, and electrical and control equipment.
- Under direct supervision, assist in performing utility locates using computer utility maps and specialized line tracing equipment.
- Operate and maintains light equipment, motors, and machines.
- Operate and assists with maintenance on pumps, instrumentation and control systems, and SCADA systems.
- Perform strenuous and heavy manual labor including occasional lifting and digging under all kinds of extreme weather conditions, emergencies, and hazardous environments.
- Read and understand written instructions such as operating manuals for mechanical and process control equipment.
- Perform basic mathematical computations and work requiring basic computer skills.
- Perform other duties as assigned by lead utility staff.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Enrolled in college accredited Water Environmental Technologies program.
- Possession of a High School Diploma or GED.
- Possession of a valid Minnesota Driver’s License with a good driving record.
Desired Qualifications:
- Possession of a valid Minnesota Commercial Driver's License (Class B) with a good driving history and no restrictions.
- Prior experience operating various kinds of heavy and light maintenance equipment.
- Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of pumps, pump control systems, trucks, light equipment, motors, and machines.
- Experience in the safe and efficient use of tools and equipment used in the Public Works Department.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of operation and maintenance of light equipment, motors, and machines.
- Knowledge of methods, techniques, tools, equipment and materials utilized in assigned area
- Knowledge of safety principles and practices related to Maintenance and Operations projects and materials
- Knowledge of basic office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and supporting software applications, as needed
- Knowledge of safe use of hazardous chemicals
- Knowledge of principles and practices of record keeping
- Knowledge of principles and practices of exceptional customer service
- Knowledge of Public Works industry and local government maintenance operations
- Ability to Maintain and repair a variety of tools and equipment
- Ability to follow oral instructions and read, interpret, follow and explain written instructions, such as operating manuals and safety instructions
- Ability to communicate clearly orally and in writing
- Ability to operate processes and equipment in a manner consistent with safety principles
- Ability to maintain written and computerized records
- Ability to safely drive and skillfully operate power equipment and hand tools involved in maintenance, repair, and construction activities
- Ability to work both in a team setting and independently in the absence of supervision
- Ability to perform job responsibilities outdoors in all Minnesota weather including climatic extremes
- Ability to demonstrate an awareness and appreciation of the cultural diversity of the community
- Ability to operate computers and handheld devices that utilize contemporary office and related application software
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Physical Demands & Working Conditions:
Work is performed in buildings and outdoors. Work is moderate duty with ability to lift, carry or push up to 60 pounds. Environmental conditions include heat, cold, toxic chemicals, noise, odors, traffic and other related occupational hazards associated with utility activities. Subject to random drug testing program.
