To qualify for this internship, you must be a continuing student enrolled or accepted for enrollment for the upcoming semester for the duration of the internship as a condition of employment (taking at least a "half time" course load). You will be required to provide documentation (transcript, enrollment certification, etc.) to support eligibility. Students may be employed throughout the academic year.

The Transportation Specialist Pathways Student Intern will work in the Office of Legislative Affairs and Policy Communications and assist higher-level staff with support in the coordination, facilitation, and implementation of the operations in that office. Some duties include:
- Serving as an initial point of contact within Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) for a high volume of inquiries from Congressional member offices, committee staffs, Library of Congress, key officials of FHWA and other agencies on all aspects of the agency's transportation programs in general and the Federal-aid Highway Program in particular.
- Providing current and accurate information in response to inquiries regarding the Federal-aid Highway Program; working closely with program offices and technical staff in developing agency responses to transportation related public policy issues.
- Supporting agency witnesses in preparation for Congressional hearing and meetings and assists in tracking legislation that may impact FHWA's transportation programs.
- Supporting the Office Director and Team Leader in maintaining a positive working relationship with Congressional Committees, and Congressional staff.
- Monitoring and tracking daily proceedings of Congressional activities and requests and keeps abreast of dealings with Congressional staff.
- Assisting the Office Director and Congressional Affairs Team Leader with planning and coordination of surface transportation governmental and Congressional activities.

- Is an entry-level student dedicated to public service, interested in national transportation policy who desires to work with Congress as part of the Executive Branch.
- Possesses strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Enjoys multi-tasking, working at a fast-paced tempo, and does not become overwhelmed by competing demands and large volumes of incoming information.
- Is organized, enjoys researching issues, has good critical thinking skills, and can synthesize large amounts of information and present them in a clear and concise manner (often working under tight deadlines).
- Has a good understanding of the United States Congress and the interaction between the three branches of government (Executive, Judicial, and Legislative).
Legislative or congressional experience is preferred, but not required.

- Analyze congressional proposals related to highways.
- Manage FHWA's development and implementation of highway authorization bills.
- Effectively respond to congressional requests for technical assistance and reports on project statuses
- Provide mission-critical briefing materials to FHWA and USDOT officials.
