Lab Summary:

Samsung – the world’s number one TV and smartphone manufacturer – is committed to deliver the best possible sound to our customers in new and exciting ways.  To that end, we have built a world-class audio lab in Valencia, California, where the world’s leading audio engineers and researchers design groundbreaking technologies and products.  If you are an engineer or scientist with a love for music and movies we want to hear from you.

Position Summary:

You will work with a team of researchers and engineers for solutions to tackling real-world problems relevant to Samsung. You may have the opportunity to publish at top-tier conferences in acoustics/audio, signal processing, and deep learning. As an intern, you will be involved in contributing to state-of-the-art team projects with talented people at Samsung and will benefit working in a fun and creative environment.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Running room-acoustics simulations using FEM, FDTD or similar software (e.g., Treble) to generate and analyze synthetic room-impulse responses.
  • Write code to automate generation of room geometries, source positions, and sensor positions that are then coupled to the room-acoustics simulations.
  • Investigate use of Machine Learning algorithms to predict acoustic properties of real speakers in real rooms.
  • Coordinate with internal subjective testing experts towards listening tests.
  • Preparing documentation, reports, and presentations related to the technology and code.
  • Working with research and product development teams in the US and Korea.
  • Preparing disclosures for patentable inventions.
  • Publishing and presenting research papers at conferences and in journals (including IEEE, AES).

Required Skills:

  • Pursuing a Master’s or a Ph.D. Degree in Acoustics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or similar.
  • Experience with wave-based and geometric acoustic simulations.
  • Relevant coursework with coding skills for machine learning, including deep-learning techniques, Digital Signal Processing.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Python and Matlab with application to numerical algorithms.

Special Attributes:

  • Interest in audio/music.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Attention to detail. Always thinking: “How can I make this better?”
  • Highly motivated, productive, and demonstrating capability to be converted from intern to full-time upon graduation.
