Shelter Assistant- The Ministry of Caring
The Shelter Assistant will support Hope House staff in providing safe, encouraging, and effective support for homeless women pursuing
emergency services, personal development, and stability in the context of a comprehensive shelter program.
The volunteer may measure the impact of their work in services provided, each client’s successful integration into the workforce, and the number of clients who move on to safe housing.
Be a dependable presence for clients at Mary Mother of Hope House. Assist with move-in: search belongings for prohibited items; ensure no
bedbugs are brought into the facility. Orient new clients to the building. Monitor site safety and help to enforce program rules. Bring training and
support to clients residing in our shelters and transitional residences that will assist them in building skills that will lead to housing stability. Identify
trends of clients’ needs in technology and other skills and assist clients in learning the effective use of technology. Assist clients on the computer
on a one-on-one basis. Enhance services provided by case managers by providing tech-specific support as well as responding to needs of clients
beyond the use of technology. Coach clients on an on-going basis to provide consistent, reliable skills training and reinforcement. Utilize coaching
skills that are responsive to a client’s individual needs as a teaching tool to lead to self-sufficiency. Assist in explaining the rules of the program to
clients, monitor site safety and help to enforce program rules in conjunction with program staff.
