2026 Summer Intern Program – Credit Product Management

What is the Opportunity?

SMBC hosts a 10-week Summer Intern Program for undergraduate students who will have the opportunity to work on teams, be exposed to significant firm-wide projects within their respective business areas and support a range of deals with our clients.

Participants will work on a variety of projects including building financial models, developing client presentations, conducting research, and participating in client meetings – all to improve their understanding of the global banking industry

Anticipated Salary: $54.95/hour

We are looking for Summer Interns to join the Credit Product Management (CPM) team

CPM was launched to establish a centralized 1LOD credit risk function. CPM’s goal is to drive adherence to credit governance and regulatory expectations, advance alignment to industry best practices and support the optimization of capital deployment.

CPM comprises of the below centers of excellence, supporting SMBC’s Coverage & Capital Markets and Structured Debt verticals. The internship program will be rotational across these: 

Enterprise Valuation (EV)

The EV team will work with the deal team to review client requests and provide a standardized approach to ensure transactions carry sound credit principles and the borrower can service its obligations. The team is involved early at deal inception and have an option to attend or dial into management presentations and due diligence events and provide diligence topics to work through

Quality Assurance (QA)

The QA team is responsible for quality assessment of credit facility underwriting, including adequacy of related credit analysis and ongoing monitoring, accuracy of borrower information, accuracy of credit ratings, and compliance with relevant credit policies and regulatory guidance relating to credit risk

Credit Training

This team serves as the centralized hub for all 1LOD credit training

Credit Strategy & Change Management 

This team supports the coordination of business and credit risk strategies.  The team serves as a front office execution center to drive remediation and transformation projects from 1LOD credit perspective. The team acts as a 1LOD liaison to technology to pursue credit automation and efficiencies

Governance and Credit Lifecycle Control

This team provides centralized process control to promote accountability and adherence to enhanced end to end credit process.  The team allows dedicated 1LOD oversight over policies, procedures, RACs, tools and templates, and exception management 

Credit Underwriting & Portfolio Management

This function was established as a centralized 1LOD credit risk function to act as an advisor to the underwriting, measuring, monitoring, and credit risk mitigation practices

Our Summer Intern Program is designed for students who completed their junior year.

This 10-week program commences in June and includes:

  • Orientation
  • Training with on-the-desk experience
  • Senior Speaker Series
  • Japanese cultural activities
  • Social networking activities
  • Volunteer Day with a local nonprofit
  • Mentorship opportunities

The successful candidate will possess or demonstrate the following personal and professional attributes: 

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree from an accredited university with a graduation date of December 2026 to May 2027; excellent academic record
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with specific ability to communicate concepts and ideas concisely and defend their validity
  • Ability to comfortably interact with clients in a professional and mature manner
  • Outstanding ethics, integrity, and judgment
  • Intellectual curiosity

SMBC’s employees participate in a hybrid workforce model that provides employees with an opportunity to work from home, as well as, from an SMBC office. SMBC requires that employees live within a reasonable commuting distance of their office location. Prospective candidates will learn more about their specific hybrid work schedule during their interview process.
