Description

Naval Medical Research Unit Dayton (NAMRU-D) conducts research on environmental health effects and aerospace medicine, addressing health and performance challenges faced by service members in operational military environments. The Environmental Health Effects Laboratory (EHEL) at the Naval Medical Research Unit-Dayton (NAMRU-D) performs research on the physical, physiological and cognitive effects of exposure to environmental hazards and stressors, to include chemicals, particulate matter, noise, vibration, temperature/humidity and altitude effects, in addition to other physiological stressors (such as fatigue, dehydration, etc.). NAMRU-D, EHEL is seeking a current or recently graduated associate's, bachelor's, or master's level candidate in a STEM field related to life and medical sciences to apply for an internship examining the health performance of Soldiers in varying environmental conditions. 

What will I be doing?

Under the guidance of a mentor, you will participate in a number of research projects that focus on:

  • Determining the potential health effects of exposures to different environmental hazards.
  • Stressors that service members may encounter during military operations.

Ongoing and upcoming projects include evaluating the health and performance effects of various pesticides, fuels and solvents, metals, cockpit pressure fluctuations, as well as efforts to decipher the underlying mechanisms of exposure-related effects.

What is the anticipated start date?

NAMRU-D is ready to make an appointment immediately. Exact start date will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate.

What is the length of the appointment?

This ORISE appointment is a full-time, twelve-month internship. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

What are the provisions?

You will receive a stipend to be determined by NAMRU-D. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other provisions may include the following:

  • Health Insurance Supplement. Participants are eligible to purchase health insurance through ORISE.
  • Relocation Allowance
  • Training and Travel Allowance?

About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.  Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Qualifications

The preferred candidate is currently pursuing or has an earned associate's, bachelor's or master's degree in a related life or medical sciences field. 

Favorable skills:

  • Relevant Coursework in Life Health and Medical Sciences
  • Knowledge or understanding of basic scientific concepts, procedures and techniques is preferred.
