Stream Restoration Intern
JOB DETAILS: The internship is designed to accommodate a student’s academic schedule along with assisting engineers and ecologists with field data collection and data management. Though not required, Beaver Creek interns will have the opportunity to pursue an independent project to complete over the course of their internship, with support from BCH mentors in the subject of their choosing. By the end of the summer, Beaver Creek interns will have the opportunity to present their projects internally or at a local conference. Field work and travel within Kentucky, Southern Ohio, & Tennessee will be required with this position. All field work-related expenses are paid for by employer (trucks, hotels, per diem, field gear).
REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate will be enrolled in (or a recent graduate of) a degree program in biology, environmental sciences, engineering, forestry, natural resources, or a related field. The applicant should have a strong interest in stream restoration, aquatic ecology, hydrology, geomorphology, environmental studies, engineering, conservation, and/or land management. The internship involves a large amount of rigorous field work and long hours – a positive attitude and strong work ethic is required. In addition, the candidate must have a flexible schedule and willingness to travel (sometimes overnight for several days).
Other desired qualifications include:
- Experience in data collection, data entry, and data management.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work long hours in adverse conditions.
- Ability to maintain a positive attitude and collect high quality data during intense field conditions.
- Ability to work without supervision.
- Good navigation skills and ability to use a GPS unit.
Experience in vegetation identification, hydraulic and hydrologic numerical modeling, invasive species, stream assessments, AutoCAD, soil characterization, GIS, and/or surveying is a plus but not required.
COMPENSATION: $16/hour
