Visitor Services Intern -Lead Salmon Camp Instructor
Position Summary
The primary role of this position will be to act as the lead for the Kodiak Refuge summer science and salmon camp program or Salmon Camp. Day camp sessions along the Kodiak, AK road system, for students in kindergarten through middle school, take place Monday-Friday during six weeks of the summer. Salmon camp fosters stewardship, creativity, leadership and connection to science, nature and the Kodiak Refuge. While the majority of time is spent on the Kodiak, AK road system, camp staff will also travel by mail plane to at least five rural communities to bring Salmon Camp to children living in communities that are off of the road system, only accessible by small plane. This position will work closely as part of a team and help provide guidance to full-time Salmon Camp Instructors that are USFWS volunteers or environmental education interns, as well as youth (teen) volunteers who assist at camp. Salmon Camp utilizes culture, stories, songs, hikes, art, birding, fishing, field trips, science and more to provide engaging and diverse experiential learning to participants.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
Core duties include, but not limited to:
· Organizing supplies and logistics for camp.
· Preparing for camp lessons and providing environmental education and leadership at camp.
· Coordinating with camp volunteers for duties and providing camp oversight.
· Communicating by email, phone, mail or in person for camp planning with camp parents or guardians, guest speakers, community leaders and other camp partners.
Marginal Duties
This position may also support a number of other environmental education programs at the Refuge such as the Youth Conservation Corps program and special events such as World Migratory Bird Day and Kodiak Crab Festival, as well as outreach at the Visitor Center.
Required Qualifications
Prior to camp, Kodiak Refuge Visitor Services Program employees and volunteers, including the SC Director will participate in a minimum of two weeks of training and two weeks for camp prep prior to the first Salmon Camp session.
This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with children ages 5-13. Experience or coursework in education. Comfortable flying in small aircraft. Comfortable being outside in inclement, wet weather.

Living Accommodations
Kodiak NWR housing will be provided. Housing will be shared, including shared common areas like bathroom and kitchen. The City of Kodiak is on Kodiak Island, with a population of around 5,500 residents.
Compensation
$1,300 - one-time roundtrip travel allowance
$525/week - living allowance
$2,000 - duty-related reimbursements (used for work duty-related expenses - discuss with supervisor)
Housing provided in refuge shared housing
AmeriCorps Award eligible ($5,176.50 Education Award; requires completion of 1200 hours)
All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
