What You’ll Do
Samsung Display America Lab is looking for an Optical engineer intern who will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge technologies for next-generation XR display and optics systems and devices. As an Optical engineer intern, you will help to build the next-generation optical systems for XR by evaluating the impact of the optical system on the users. The team pursues research & development to provide optics solution to support display manufacturing for VR AR business.
Location: Onsite at our San Jose, CA office 5 days a week
Reports to: Senior Staff Engineer
- Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to develop and mature state-of-the-art technologies;
- Perform in-depth optical design, simulation and analysis, using tools like Code V, Zemax, LightTools and Meta Optical Designer, to provide recommendations for system improvement
- Perform optical system design and simulation for rotationally symmetrical optics, freeform, as well as diffractive optical elements;
- Determine hardware specifications to assess overall performance of novel optical architectures;
- Debug, and troubleshooting of optical problems;
- Write code to support optical design, simulation and analysis;
- Report and present results to guide design decisions.
- Complete other responsibilities as assigned.
What You Bring
- Pursuing PhD or Master degree in Optics, Electrical Engineering, Physics or related areas, PhD preferred;
- Expertise in one or more areas: optical design, modeling, metrology, freeform, metalens, etc.;
- Expertise and experience in coding, data analysis and statistical modeling;
- Strong publication record demonstrating innovative research preferred;
- Experience in VR AR display and optics is a plus;
- Experience in diffractive optical elements and development is a plus;
- Experience in geometrical optics and wave optics including FDTD, RCWA techniques is a plus;
- Passionate about building extraordinary products;
- Good communication skills and presentation skills, able to clearly articulate the problem statements and the solution approach;
- A willingness to dive deep, experiment rapidly to get things done preferred
