(#6331714003) Intern, Color Scientist
What You’ll Learn
- Project Overview: The field of HDR display metrology and modeling is a green field despite products having been sold for over 10 years. You will uncover and solve many riddles in operating and modeling HDR displays.
- Skills You’ll Learn:
- Fine-tune your knowledge in subjective testing of color
- Learn from a top display meteorologist in the US who will challenge you to see displays differently
- Prepare for peer-review quality publications
What You’ll Do
Samsung Display’s America R&D Lab is recruiting an intern for the Summer 2025 to develop world-class, HDR display color modeling. Don’t be thinking this has been done before; color modeling of HDR will be an avenue to recognize your contributions! You will collaborate with colleagues through video conferencing from Samsung Display in Korea, as well. This lab has a strong reputation to promote your work through industry conference outlets, magazines and peer-reviewed journals, such as Color Research and Applications.
This position seeks an expert in color science who will develop and optimize color algorithms for AMOLED displays, develop new metrology and work with standards organizations in order to push the envelope of high dynamic range technology.
Location: Onsite at our San Jose, CA headquarters 4-5 days a week
Reports to: Sr. Principal Engineer, Technology Standardization
- Interact with team members to contribute towards moving forward a color model using Matlab, based on the current international standard CIECAM16 and extensions for high dynamic range rendering.
- Design and execute subjective testing trials to support visual assessment of HDR displays
- Present your findings and IP contributions to peer reviews and possibly be part of a works publication.
- Drive your own development project as you take ownership in your research but with an ever-available mentor at hand to guide you in industrial practices—ask questions, design solutions, and own the results.
- Added bonus, if you have keen C++ Windows 11 skills in addition to our color prerequisites, you may be excited to design a user-friendly and intuitive graphical user interface to control the optical measurement devices and enable automate measurement routines, data acquisition and visualization from a Windows, HDR-enabled platform.
- Complete other responsibilities as assigned.
What You Bring
- Enrolled in a Master’s or PhD candidacy in Color Science or related field, with significant coursework in color science completed
- Must have at least one academic quarter or semester remaining
- Practice great analytical and problem-solving skills; be collaborative
- Have excellent written and verbal communication
- Be familiar with color and HDR television standards CIECAM16, CIECAM02, iCAM06, ITU-R BT.2020, SMPTE ST 2084
- Be hands-on with experience operating light measurement devices and instrumentation systems
- Be ready to put your proficient Matlab or Python programming skills to a test
- As an added plus proficiency bring Windows-based C++ programming for UI development
- You’re inclusive, adapting your style to the situation and diverse global norms of our people
- An avid learner, you approach challenges with curiosity and resilience, seeking data to help build understanding
