Water Quality & Engineering Interns
Are you looking for a summer internship? Saint Paul Regional Water Services (SPRWS) is looking to hire multiple individuals to work with the Water Main Inspection Team, Lead Service Line Replacement Inspection Team, and Water Quality Team.
A successful candidate will possess the following:
- Orientation to detail and proficient in documentation
- Time-management skills and the ability to track hours for a variety of projects
- Demonstrate an ability to be an effective team member by being self-motivated
- Ask for or offer assistance to other team members
Several positions will involve working long days in a construction environment outdoors.
Here’s what you can expect to do:
Water Quality Unit - 2 available positions
The Water Quality Unit is responsible for source water monitoring, water treatment processes control, distribution system water quality monitoring, responding to customer complaints, providing sampling and testing support to the distribution system during the main construction season.
Additional duties may include:
- Basic field water sampling from source to tap and water quality analysis
- Assist water quality staff with routine sample collection and perform field water quality analysis in the distribution system
- Assist with general laboratory support functions
- Performs other related duties and responsibilities as required
Water Main Construction Inspection Team - 3 available positions
These positions will require working outside at field sites and will require extensive time out of the office as dictated by the construction site location and schedule. The primary duties are assisting with construction oversight and documentation under the guidance of Water Utility Technician staff.
Additional duties may include:
- Operate GPS survey equipment
- Assist with pre and post construction inspections
- Assist with Gopher State One-Call Utility locates
- Correspond with customers, contractors, operations staff, etc.
Lead Service Line Replacement Inspections - 1 available position
The primary duties are assisting with construction inspection and project management for lead service line replacement projects under the direction of a senior inspector or project engineer.
Additional duties may include:
- Construction field observation
- Pay item quantity measurement and tabulation
- Customer communication and coordination
- Review televising videos
Information Specific to this Position:
Anticipated start/end dates: mid-May to early September (Dates are somewhat flexible)
Hours: 40 hours a week during the summer

Position Requirements:
Water Main Construction Inspection/Lead Service Line Replacement Inspection:
Eligible candidates must be currently attending or enrolled in a post-secondary program studying in the field of Civil or Environmental Engineering; Civil Engineering Technology; or a related discipline.
- Must maintain active student status for the duration of internship.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class D driver's license or equivalent out-of-state driver's license. Able to drive a company vehicle as necessary.
Water Quality:
Eligible candidates must be currently studying microbiology, biology, chemistry, water quality, water treatment or a similar discipline or enrolled in a Water Environmental Technologies program and meet the following minimum qualifications:
- Must maintain active student status for the duration of internship.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class D driver's license or equivalent out-of-state driver's license. Must be able to drive a company vehicle as necessary.
