Position Summary
This position will primarily work with the Russian River staff from May until September. in Seward, AK. Well over 100,000 visitors come to the Russian River to fish, view wildlife, and enjoy the outdoors. This position works to ensure a positive experience and assists in efforts to reduce conflicts with bears. This work includes conducting outreach, facilities maintenance, habitat protection, and other related duties. This position will aid in the long-term efforts of conserving the various sensitive resources in the area.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Outreaching to visitors with staff and volunteers about area regulations in place to reduce wildlife conflicts
- Maintain and clean facilities, which may include wading in a river
- Construct and maintain habitat fencing in and around the Russian River
- Hike as much as five miles in a day on and off trail which will include elevation changes
Marginal Duties
- Assist with hosting outside groups from schools, tribes, or other partner organizations
- Assist programs outside of the Russian River program which could include trails, cabins, developed recreation, aquatics, or terrestrial programs
Required Qualifications
- Ability and willingness to work outside in various weather condition
- Ability to walk over uneven terrain, in streams, and changing elevations while carrying a pack as much as 50 pounds
- Communication skills
- Adherence to Forest and District policies
- Valid state Driver’s license
This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience or education in fisheries or aquatics
- Experience or education in communication, outreach, or education
- Experience in bear country

Living Accommodations
Housing in the form of a bunkhouse will be available. All rooms may be double occupancy. While dormitories may be co-ed, we generally put same sex roommates together. Dorms include use of the kitchen, living room, bathroom and laundry facilities.
This position is based out of the Kenai Lake Work Center in Moose Pass, AK. Moose Pass is a friendly and picturesque little town with a year-round population of about 350. It is tucked away in the mountains along the shoreline of Upper Trail Lake at Mile 29 of the Seward Highway, a National Scenic Byway.
Compensation
$450/week living allowance
$1300 one-time travel stipend
$300/month (for 4 months) housing stipend
AmeriCorps eligible (requires 450 hours)
All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
