Intern Description:
This position joins a skilled, energetic, and engaging team of engineers who perform all aspects of high-voltage transmission line design; a swift-paced, dynamic, niche engineering discipline. Interns are trusted to participate and contribute value within actual design projects as well as department policy/procedure creation and revision. They will gain exposure to coordinating and collaborating with professionals in other departments and work locations. Interns will likely participate in technical conversations and project meetings with project managers and other professionals on the project team. They will likely visit Evergy transmission line projects in the field before, during, and after construction. Construction site visits provide the opportunity to see transmission linemen, some of the most highly skilled and valued workers in the construction industry, at their craft.
Typical intern responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- The creation of structure loading drawings and review/analysis of vendor produced calculations and structure drawings;
- Construction site visits to perform safety observations and gain familiarity with the practical application of engineering deliverables (drilled pier foundation pouring, structure erection, wire stringing, etc.);
- Working with all aspects of transmission line survey data, including LiDAR, land based models, easements, potholing, and soil boring logs;
- design and analysis of the various components of transmission line foundation systems (e.g. lateral/moment loading, bearing/uplift for deep drilled piers and embedded structures);
- Collaboration with the transmission line engineering team as well as other evergy teams (permitting, substation, real-estate, project management, construction and maintenance, etc.);
- Performing tasks in PLS-CADD and PLS-POLE, the highly sophisticated and robust industry-standard software for transmission line engineering;
- Preparation of construction drawings with bills of material, and creation of additional supporting construction documents;
- analysis of existing facility structural capacity and electrical (NESC & company policy) clearance margin.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Candidates must be currently enrolled in a university with an ABET accredited engineering program in one of the following or a related technical field: Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Civil Engineering.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Required:
- Must be driven to overcome dynamic challenges as part of a collaborative project team;
- An inquisitive, critical thinking mindset, with initiative to understand the “why’s” behind design standards and the perspectives of all stakeholders;
- Organizational skills, along with excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with others;
- A proficient knowledge of basic engineering principles and advanced mathematics;
- A proficiency in spreadsheets, word processing and database software;
- An ability to evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria, using sound judgment in making adaptations and modifications.
Working Conditions:
Conditions will vary from office, substation, and transmission line field environments.
