Intern - Land Surveying

POSITION PURPOSE 

The Intern – Land Surveying will directly support the Rights of Way and Surveying department. The ideal candidate will have an eagerness to learn and perform relative skills in Land Surveying, legal description writing, legal research, and CAD drafting. Intern candidates must also be enrolled in an undergraduate or associate degree program in Civil Engineering Technology, Surveying or related field. 

WORK SCHEDULE 

  • Interns will work full-time (40 hours/week) during the summer months, starting mid-May through early September with a mix of field and in-office activities 

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Assist surveyor in topo surveys, as-built surveys and boundary surveys
  • Assist surveyor with construction staking, both traditional survey and GNSS survey
  • Locate existing property monumentation
  • Perform legal research for Surveying and Right of Way department to assist in compliance and regulatory related activities

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • High school degree or equivalent; must be enrolled in an accredited university or college program, preferred area of studies includes Civil Engineering Technology, Surveying or related field
  • Valid Wisconsin’s driver’s license
  • Energetic and eager to tackle new projects and ideas
  • Strong business acumen, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated analytical, problem solving, and critical thinking skills
  • Must be able to work effectively in a team environment

JOB LOCATION 

The position requires a mix of in-office work and field visits, and office days are in downtown Madison, Wisconsin, where MGE is an active participant in community efforts to preserve the area's extraordinary quality of life. We offer free, on-site parking and are located near biking trails and bus stops. Many employees enjoy the use of our many on-site EV charging stations.
