Position: Summer Camp Dance Specialist

Supervised by: JCC Day Camps Program Coordinator
JOB SUMMARY
The Camp Specialist plays a key role in furthering the mission of the camp by developing and delivering safe, engaging, and age-appropriate activities in a specialized area. This position requires strong instructional skills, leadership, and enthusiasm for working with children. The Camp Specialist is responsible for supervising and motivating staff, ensuring the proper use of equipment and facilities, and actively participating in all camp activities, including theme days and after-hours programs.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Program Development & Instruction
Design and implement a specialty program tailored to the age and skill levels of campers.
Develop and deliver progressive lesson plans that align with camp goals and camper abilities.
Assess camper and staff abilities to ensure appropriate instruction and program adaptation.
Regularly evaluate the success of program activities and make necessary adjustments.
Safety & Staff Training
Ensure all staff and campers follow established safety guidelines and best practices.
Assist in training staff in the program area, ensuring they understand their roles and responsibilities.
Reinforce and model proper safety and educational procedures.
Facility & Equipment Management
Maintain program area equipment and ensure its security when not in use.
Conduct daily safety and cleanliness checks of the program area and report any necessary repairs.
Ensure equipment is properly cleaned and maintained on a set schedule.
Coordinate with supervisors to complete supply purchases before and during the camp season.
Camper & Staff Engagement
Maintain open and positive communication with all camp staff.
Actively participate in all camp activities, providing support and guidance as needed.
Supervise and assist with evening programs, special events, late nights, and other all-camp activities.
Provide counseling staff with ongoing program ideas and support.
Check in multiple times daily with campers and staff, informing supervisors of any concerns.
Additional Responsibilities
Attend all staff meetings.
Complete any other duties as assigned by camp leadership.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Experience & Certifications:
Prior experience in a similar role within a summer camp or youth program.
Experience developing and leading activities for children and/or young adults.
Current certification in First Aid and CPR (or willingness to obtain before camp).
Relevant instructional certification or related experience preferred.
Training and experience teaching program skills to both adults and children is a plus.
Skills & Abilities:
Strong ability to engage and motivate children in an outdoor setting.
Effective communication skills with campers, staff, and supervisors.
Ability to assess camper and staff behavior, enforce safety regulations, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
Observational skills to recognize environmental and safety hazards.
Ability to remain flexible and adapt programs to changing needs.
High energy, proactive mindset with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Strong organizational and time-management skills.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to stand for extended periods, bend, stoop, and stretch as needed.
Manual dexterity and coordination to operate program equipment.
Adequate hearing and vision to identify and respond to environmental hazards.
Physical ability to respond to emergencies, including lifting up to 50 lbs.
Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, with exposure to sun, heat, and natural elements.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Must pass a background check and central registry check with the state of Michigan.
Completion of online Sexual Abuse Prevention training (provided by The J) before the first day of work.
Willingness to take on additional tasks as needed to ensure camper satisfaction and program success.
