Fitness Assistant

JOB SUMMARY

The Fitness Assistant helps to oversee the fitness center and all other fitness spaces and program areas. They are responsible for assisting with the supervision of fitness equipment, patron safety, and overall fitness facility cleanliness. Performing daily cleaning duties and ensuring the fitness spaces are organized and safe are top priorities of a Fitness Assistant.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in using a variety of fitness equipment
  • Demonstrate positive customer service experiences
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds
  • Ability to Work Independently: Proven track record of effectively managing time and tasks with minimal supervision while consistently meeting deadlines and achieving goals.
  • Strong Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication abilities and demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with team members and stakeholders.
  • Attention to Detail: Exceptional focus on accuracy and thoroughness, ensuring that all tasks are completed with care. Skilled in identifying potential errors or areas for improvement in processes.
  • Professionalism: Maintains a high standard of professionalism in all interactions, demonstrating respect, courtesy, and a positive attitude in fast-paced environments.
  • Ability to instruct patrons on fitness equipment.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Greet and engage with patrons
  • Provide information about the fitness spaces.
  • Enforce Rec Well policies and procedures.
  • Work with the Building Manager and coworkers to ensure the fitness center runs smoothly and safely.
  • Instruct various programs within the fitness area, such as Fitness Center Orientations or Fitness Assessments such as body composition testing, skin fold testing, blood pressure readings & flexibility testing.
  • Work with coworkers during emergency procedures to ensure the best outcome.
  • Organize equipment and perform other daily responsibilities at a time when there will be minimal disturbance or interruption to members.
  • Perform maintenance on fitness equipment in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for daily cleaning duties within the fitness center, annex & cardio loft.
  • Provide appropriate care in emergency situations as stated in the Emergency Action Plan.
  • Demonstrate proper use and operation of all fitness equipment, ensuring safe and effective use by patrons.
  • Ability to maintain and demonstrate proper spotting techniques.

COMPENSATION

  • $15/hour - Minimum rate for new hires

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must be available to work a variety of shifts, including nights, weekends, and early mornings.
  • Attend all scheduled staff meetings and trainings.
  • Act in accordance with the Clery Act as a mandated reporter and carry out responsibilities in reporting a crime on campus as a University Recreation and Well-Being staff member.
  • Must be enrolled part-time, at least 6 credit hours per semester for undergraduate students and 4 credit hours for graduate students at Oakland University.
  • Must obtain American Red Cross First Aid, CPR, and AED Certification upon hire
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

  • Fitness Assistants report directly to the Fitness Coordinator.
  • Fitness Assistants report indirectly to the Fitness Team Lead and Assistant Director of Fitness and Well-Being.
  • Additionally, Fitness Assistants may receive on-duty requests or instruction from any Rec Well professional staff member.
