JOB SUMMARY

Lifeguards are responsible for ensuring the safety of all patrons by preventing, recognizing, and responding to emergencies in and around the Aquatics Center. This role includes enforcing pool rules, monitoring activities, and providing immediate rescue and first aid when necessary. Lifeguards must maintain a high level of vigilance, professionalism, and preparedness at all times. Additional duties include conducting safety inspections, maintaining the cleanliness of the facility, and assisting with aquatic programs as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to focus on the pool area and quickly identify potential dangers. 
  • Ability to assess situations quickly and make informed decisions in emergency situations. 
  • Ability to work together as a team to complete duties and provide a safe environment.
  • Must hold a current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification, including successfully completing a swimming skills test, rescue techniques, first aid, and CPR.
  • Ability to Work Independently: Proven track record of effectively managing time and tasks with minimal supervision while consistently meeting deadlines and achieving goals.
  • Strong Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication abilities and demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with team members and stakeholders.
  • Attention to Detail: Exceptional focus on accuracy and thoroughness, ensuring that all tasks are completed with care. Skilled in identifying potential errors or areas for improvement in processes.
  • Professionalism: Maintains a high standard of professionalism in all interactions, demonstrating respect, courtesy, and a positive attitude in fast-paced environments.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Continuously scan the pool area to identify potential hazards and swimmers in distress. 
  • Educate swimmers about water safety rules.
  • Enforce pool regulations and lane usage by members and rental groups. 
  • Immediately react to emergencies by performing rescues using appropriate techniques.
  • Provide first aid and CPR as needed in case of injuries or emergencies. 
  • Provide appropriate care in emergency situations as stated in the Emergency Action Plan.
  • Document all incidents and injuries following established procedures. 
  • Performs chemical checks as assigned and document levels.
  • Review the pool schedule to note rental group and lap swim spaces and direct groups accordingly.
  • Follow opening and closing procedures to include inspection of the pool area for safety hazards at the opening and properly ensuring all members and rental groups exit before securing the pool area at closing.
  • Report any customer service or facility issues to Building Managers and supervisors for resolution.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor and communicate clearly with patrons and other staff. 
  • Attend monthly in-services to stay current on skills and maintain lifeguard certification.

COMPENSATION

  • $17.25/hour - Minimum rate for new hires

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Available to work a minimum of 8 hours and a maximum of 20 hours per week in this role, including various shifts during nights, weekends, and early mornings.
  • Attend all scheduled staff meetings and trainings.
  • Act in accordance with the Clery Act as a mandated reporter and carry out responsibilities in reporting a crime on campus as a University Recreation and Well-Being staff member.
  • Must be enrolled part-time, at least 6 credit hours per semester for undergraduate students and 4 credit hours for graduate students at Oakland University.
  • Must obtain American Red Cross First Aid, CPR, and AED Certification upon hire
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

  • Lifeguards report directly to the Assistant Director of Membership and Facilities.
  • Lifeguards indirectly work with the Aquatics Team Leads and the Aquatics Coordinator.
  • Additionally, Lifeguards may receive on-duty requests or instruction from any Rec Well professional staff member.
