JOB SUMMARY
Rec Well Sports Officials are responsible for promoting fair competition and ensuring player safety by upholding intramural sports regulations, policies, and standards of sportsmanship. They oversee player eligibility and handle conflicts professionally. They keep the game running smoothly by remaining vigilant for issues, recording scores, and logging incidents. Rec Well Sports Officials aid in the preparation of games, manage equipment, and conduct safety checks. They clarify rules for participants and react appropriately in emergencies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrate knowledge of good customer service practices.
- Strong knowledge of sports rules and gameplay for assigned intramural sports.
- Ability to enforce rules and make fair, confident, and consistent calls in a fast-paced environment.
- Basic understanding of sportsmanship and game management principles.
- Physical ability to keep up with gameplay, including running and standing for extended periods.
- Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
- Ability to Work Independently: Proven track record of effectively managing time and tasks with minimal supervision while consistently meeting deadlines and achieving goals.
- Strong Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication abilities and demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with team members and stakeholders.
- Attention to Detail: Exceptional focus on accuracy and thoroughness, ensuring that all tasks are completed with care. Skilled in identifying potential errors or areas for improvement in processes.
- Professionalism: Maintains a high standard of professionalism in all interactions, demonstrating respect, courtesy, and a positive attitude in fast-paced environments.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Monitor players' eligibility and team entries.
- Promote fair play by enforcing intramural sportsmanship policies and addressing unsportsmanlike conduct appropriately.
- Understand and enforce Intramural Sports policies and procedures to ensure fair play, participant safety, and program integrity.
- Maintain awareness of gameplay, identifying and addressing potential issues, conflicts, or safety concerns as they arise.
- Assist with setting up and taking down equipment, ensuring all necessary materials are available before and stored properly after games.
- Record game scores, track fouls, and document incidents or injuries as needed.
- Mediate disputes between players and teams while maintaining a calm and professional demeanor.
- Serve as a resource for players by answering rule-related questions and clarifications when needed.
- Conduct pre- and post-game inspections to identify and report any safety hazards or equipment issues to maintain a safe playing area for all games.
- Participate in all scheduled training sessions and meetings to remain updated on rule changes and officiating techniques.
- Provide appropriate care in emergency situations as stated in the Emergency Action Plan.
- Assist with clean up to leave all game areas and storage clean and organized at the end of games and events.

- Document detailing any previous sports experiences, including any coaching, officiating, or playing sports.
COMPENSATION
- $15/hour - Minimum rate for new hires
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Must be available to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and early mornings.
- Attend all scheduled staff meetings and trainings.
- Act in accordance with the Clery Act as a mandated reporter and carry out responsibilities in reporting a crime on campus as a University Recreation and Well-Being staff member.
- Must be enrolled part-time, at least 6 credit hours per semester for undergraduate students and 4 credit hours for graduate students at Oakland University.
- Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
- Rec Well Sports Officials report directly to the Sports and Recreation Program Coordinator.
- Rec Well Sports Officials report indirectly to the Rec Well Sports Supervisors and Recreation and Club Sports Team Leads.
- Additionally, Rec Well Sports Officials may receive on-duty requests or instruction from Recreation and Outdoor Complex Supervisors and any Rec Well professional staff member.
