Public Program Internship

Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant is looking for a motivated and energetic individual who enjoys marine science and working with people. This internship will provide experiential learning opportunities and practical work experience in the field of environmental / marine education. This position is intended for an undergraduate student to explore career interests, develop environmental education skills and expand professional networks in environmental education, with emphasis on aquarium public programming. 
Some experience communicating science to visitors of all ages is preferred. The internship work dates are May 19-August 1, 2025. The intern will work with marine education faculty to create and lead aquarium public programs for all ages at the UGA Marine Education Center and Aquarium near Savannah, Georgia. Onsite housing and daily lunch provided. The intern will assist in leading programs, coordinating activities for visiting groups, creating new programs, serving as an aquarium docent, and conducting aquarium enhancement projects with input from the Aquarium Curator.

  • Assist in creation and implementation of aquarium public programs
  • Utilize skills and knowledge gathered during undergraduate studies
  • Work in an environment conducive to learning and professional growth


Location and Hours

  • Position based at UGA Marine Education Center and Aquarium on UGA’s Skidaway Marine Science Campus, Skidaway Island (30 Ocean Science Circle)
  • 10 weeks, 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. No work June 30- July 4.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position

  • Previous experience leading educational programs for the public
  • Previous experience in marine science education
  • Excellent team working, communication, and leadership skills
  • First Aid and CPR certification

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Intern must be currently enrolled in accredited college/university
  • Completion of internship application and standard background check
  • Valid state driver’s license
  • United States citizen or possess a valid U.S. work visa
  • Physical ability to work indoors in summer heat and lift objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Pre and post internship assessments, progress and summary reports, and exit interview

  • Physical ability to work outdoors in ambient conditions and lift objects up to 50 lbs
