kinkofa is the first-ever family history and genealogy platform dedicated to connecting the African Diaspora. We build and leverage innovative technologies to provide a seamless and engaging experience for users to connect with their roots, cultures, and families. ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Join us as a Backend Engineering Associate and play a crucial role in building and scaling the infrastructure that powers kinkofa’s platform. In this role, you’ll develop and optimize backend services, manage databases, and contribute to the reliability and security of our cloud-based systems.

We're looking for a self-motivated and detail-oriented individual eager to apply their skills in backend development, cloud computing, and API design to enhance user experiences. Gain invaluable hands-on experience developing robust backend solutions that drive innovation in genealogy and historical preservation.

 

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Build, implement, and maintain backend services and APIs that power kinkofa’s platform.
  • Work in Supabase and AWS to develop scalable and secure backend solutions.
  • Optimize database queries and schemas to improve performance and reliability.
  • Implement authentication and authorization mechanisms to protect user data.
  • Monitor system performance and troubleshoot issues to ensure high availability.
  • Automate internal workflows to improve development efficiency and system reliability.
  • Maintain detailed documentation for backend systems, APIs, and processes.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product, data, and frontend teams to enhance platform functionality.
  • Take ownership of a capstone project, planning, implementing, and optimizing a feature that drives tangible impact.

 

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO SUCCEED

  • Strong technical foundation – ability to write clean, efficient, and scalable backend code.
  • Collaboration & adaptability – ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

  • Passion for building – excitement for working at a startup and contributing to meaningful projects.

 

WHO YOU ARE (RECOMMENDED SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, & INTERESTS)

  • Completing and/or pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in backend programming languages such as JavaScript (Node.js), Python, or Go.
  • Experience working with databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, or MongoDB) and writing queries.
  • Understanding of AWS services (S3, API Gateway, etc.) and cloud infrastructure management.
  • Familiarity with RESTful and GraphQL APIs, and best practices for designing scalable backend architectures.

 

NICE TO HAVES

  • Experience working with Supabase (or Firebase) for authentication, database management, and storage.
  • Knowledge of Docker and containerized applications is a plus.
  • Interest in product development, genealogy, and historical preservation is a bonus.
