Arborist Intern

We are currently recruiting an Arborist Intern to gain experience and develop skills related to the field of arboriculture by working alongside arborist certified staff to learn and practice tree care and maintenance in accordance with best practices.

This is a full-time (40 hours per week), paid internship, running from May 2025 to August 2025 (10-12 weeks.)  The hourly rate for this internship is $15.00-$18.00.

 

Job Responsibilities:

 

  • Assist the Arborist in the management of care and maintenance of trees and woody plants across The Arboretum, with strict adherence to arboriculture best practices.

     
  • Learn and apply arboricultural skills to include but not limited to cutting, pruning, fertilizing, and watering as well as trimming and shaping trees and shrubs to enhance their health and appearance.

     
  • Learn and apply the correct process for planting and transplanting trees and woody plants to include hole preparation, backfilling, mulching, staking, watering, weeding and caging.

     
  • Document and maintain Arboretum records on tree assessments, maintenance, monitoring, pruning and/or removal activities.

     
  • Train and operate a variety of equipment to include but not limited to chainsaws, shipper, stump grinder, mower, bucket truck, golf carts, and RTVs.

     
  • Complete an independent project related to area of study that will culminate in a presentation at the end of the internship period.


     

Qualifications:

  • Enrollment in, or completion of, a post-secondary program related to: Arboriculture, Horticulture, Forestry, Natural Sciences, or related field. 
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be able and willing to work outside in all types of weather conditions.
  • Ability to follow directions and work well with others.

     
  • Ability to independently perform job requirements in a reasonable amount of time.

     
  • Must be able to lift in excess of 50 pounds, walk frequently, bend, climb a ladder, stoop, dig, and raise arms above head.
  • Must have a current valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
  • Regular and predictable attendance is essential.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
