POSITION SUMMARY:
The Data Analyst plays a leading role in ensuring data accuracy, accessibility, and strategic insights that support Michigan Virtual’s mission to maximize learning and teaching by bringing together the best in people and technology. This position collaborates with teams across the organization to query and extract data from existing databases, analyze and report on key data, in support of research initiatives, operational decision-making, and compliance reporting for internal and external stakeholders.
The ideal candidate will develop deep expertise in Michigan Virtual’s databases and external education data sources, proactively identifying opportunities for improved data utilization and reporting efficiency while adhering to industry best practices and data security protocols. This role is ideal for a data professional looking to expand their technical skills, business intelligence expertise, and leadership capabilities in a mission-driven organization.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide direction and recommendations for Michigan Virtual’s data collection, organization, and reporting processes, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and data security across all platforms.
- Enhance and maintain databases by integrating external education data sources, streamlining data pipelines, and automating manual processes where possible.
- Query and extract data from complex data sets and develop and refine data sets, dashboards, and reports to provide actionable insights to internal and external stakeholders.
- Build and maintain critical reports and dashboards using SQL Server Management Studio and SSRS
- Proactively identify, evaluate, and make recommendations on opportunities to automate and improve reporting and analysis.
- Support decision-making by analyzing student learning trends, program effectiveness, and operational efficiencies.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with various internal stakeholders, including research, technology, and program delivery teams, to define data priorities, business intelligence needs, and reporting strategies.
- Ensure compliance with Michigan Department of Education and other stakeholder reporting requirements, proactively identifying and resolving data-related issues.
- Comply with relevant data privacy regulations, such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), by overseeing data access controls, consent management, and data handling procedures.
- Stay updated with advancements in data analysis techniques, tools, and industry best practices to continually enhance analytical capabilities and SQL proficiency.
- Inform data governance frameworks, policies, and procedures to ensure data integrity, quality, and security across all organizational platforms, including the development and oversight of data-sharing agreements with third parties.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Data Analytics, Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
- 3+ years of experience in data analysis, reporting, and database management.
- Proven experience with SQL (writing queries, managing datasets, and building reports).
- Experience with Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio and SSRS (or similar reporting tools).
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate data into meaningful insights.
- Excellent communication skills to effectively collaborate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to handle confidential data responsibly and comply with data privacy regulations.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, Quicksight, Looker).
- Knowledge of Python, R, or other programming languages used in data analysis.
- Familiarity with API integrations and web-based data gathering.
- Interest in automation, machine learning, or predictive analytics for future business intelligence growth.
- Background in education, edtech, or student learning analytics, including familiarity with Learning Management Systems (LMS) and Student Information Systems (SIS).
