Senior Engineering Intern (Stations)

Job Summary

The MBTA Stations Department is responsible for the maintenance and repair of facilities and structures owned, occupied, or operated by the MBTA. Buildings include locations such as stations, bus garages, maintenance facilities, heavy and light rail car houses, office buildings, operations centers, pump rooms, ventilation fan rooms, etc. Systems maintained by Stations within these facilities include HVAC, lifts, hoists, cranes, pumps, plumbing systems, building structure, fire suppression, etc.

The Sr. Engineering Intern would assist the Stations teams in gathering, organization, and discovery of information and physical assets. The Office of Stations manages thousands of assets such as HVAC equipment, boilers, air compressors, plumbing systems, sprinkler systems, standpipe systems, overhead cranes, bus and train lifts, dewatering pumps, bridges, physical structures, etc. It will be the duty of the Senior Engineering Intern to identify key information regarding these systems.

The most qualified (or ideal) candidate would be a student pursuing an engineering degree in civil, mechanical, or facilities with a positive attitude and willing to learn something new. We are looking to hire two (2) interns, who will work onsite in Charlestown from 6:00am to 2:30pm (40 hours per week) for approximately three months (end date flexible, based on university requirements).

 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Support department staff by gathering and organizing information, locations, pictures, etc. of assigned asset type(s), such as sprinkler systems, standpipes, pump rooms, etc.
  • Work with Stations engineers to analyze drawings, blueprints, data, and equipment, systemwide.
  • Travel MBTA system to gather information and data on facilities related systems.
  • Organize data for ease of use and navigation using programs such as Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, etc.
  • Utilize AutoCAD to produce, alter, and analyze drawings.
  • Audit and edit service contracts.
  • Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

  • Currently an enrolled student with a Facilities, Mechanical, Civil, Structural, Industrial, Environmental, or similar Engineering concentration.
  • Ability to work a 6:00am to 2:30pm schedule, beginning and ending in Charlestown, MA (adjacent to Sullivan MBTA stop).
  • Advanced computer skills, including the Microsoft Office Suite, Google Drive, AutoCAD, Adobe Acrobat, etc.
  • Above average ability to work independently with limited instructions.
  • Above average ability to gather and organize information.
  • Above average ability to investigate normal or abnormal situations for diagnosis.
  • Above average ability to track down mechanical system extents from drawings, employee experience, or field investigation.
  • Above average ability to navigate and ride the MBTA system.
  • Willingness to follow Right of Way (ROW) rules and requirements (taught at a class, conducted by the MBTA, where the candidates will be required to pass a test).
  • Ability to independently commute to assigned work locations in the Boston, MA metro area, as required by the role.
  • Authorized to work in the United States (international students in CPT, STEM, or OPT programs through a university are eligible to apply).
