Materials Science and Simulations Intern
Job Summary:
We are seeking a skilled Machine Learning Intern to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will support IMI projects that benefit from linking ML and simulations. You will work closely with data scientists, software engineers, and product managers to create scalable solutions that leverage big data and artificial intelligence. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in programming and a passion for solving complex problems through machine learning techniques.
Responsibilities:
- Build and use ML-based workflows bridging between DFT simulations, classical MD simulations, and experiment
- Use the developed methods to screen material candidates for further experimentation
Minimum qualifications:
- At least two years of college preparation in Materials Science, Physics, or related fields are required (candidates holding M.S. and demonstrating a solid progress towards Ph.D. are particularly encouraged to apply).
- Coursework records demonstrating understanding of Physics
- Experience with ML tools
- Solid programming skills in at least one programming language
- Good communication skills and a strong drive to deliver in a high-pace collaborative environment.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience with atomic modeling tools, including DFT (VASP and/or ATK preferred), molecular dynamics
- Knowledge of Python/NumPy
- Familiarity with data science tools
- Understanding of strengths and weaknesses of different ML approaches
- Understanding of basic solid state concepts (crystal structure, chemical bonding), thermodynamic concepts (relating to materials stability, chemical transformations, and kinetics of chemical reactions), other key materials science concepts
