Visit Milwaukee offers internship opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students to gain firsthand experience in the destination marketing industry. Internships are offered for the benefit of the student, and will focus on skill development and professional growth. 

INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES: A successful internship depends greatly on the effort and work ethic put forth by the intern. Interns will become part of the Visit Milwaukee team, and as such are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner. Interns will be expected to complete their assignments in order to receive maximum educational and professional benefits from the internship experience. 

INTERNSHIP SUMMARY: The intern will be assigned special projects and duties as determined by their supervisor to support and assist the Visit Milwaukee Event Experience department.

The Event Experience department works with booked conventions, meetings and events to coordinate local logistics. They also assist groups with promoting our destination both prior to and during their convention. Event Experience ensures an exceptional Milwaukee experience and may assist the convention in many ways, from airport/hotel welcome experiences to transportation, hotel arrangements, meeting logistics, entertainment, dining and off-site events. The Event Experience managers connect conventions and their attendees with local businesses, specifically highlighting our many Visit Milwaukee Partners.

Requirements

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: This position will assist the Event Experience team with servicing visitors and groups, assisting with special events, and other duties and projects as determined by the goals of the internship. This intern supports the needs of the department and organization in several ways. The intern will be expected to:

  • Assist with special events, projects and opportunities as assigned.
  • Assist with client giveaway program, including inventory management and RFP process for vendors.
  • Assist with volunteer recruitment program. Research opportunities for volunteer recruitment from Milwaukee higher education institutions.
  • Welcome Signage production and delivery.
  • Assist with the planning and execution of Visitor Experience Activations such as Milwaukee’s Night Market, Partner Mixers, etc)
  • Official Visit Milwaukee Collateral Distribution.
  • Client gift assembly and delivery to Milwaukee hotels.
  • Send referrals on behalf of Visit Milwaukee’s 1,000+ Partners.
  • Support Event Experience managers with financial tasks such as Check Requests and Event Budgeting.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required education and experience:

  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited academic institution with a major in business, communications, hospitality/event   planning, or a related field.
  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior customer service experience and hospitality industry experience preferred.

Required skills, knowledge and abilities: 

  • Experience in Microsoft Suite, databases, Canva and aptitude to learn new programs/software.
  • Strong knowledge of the greater Milwaukee area including attractions, arts and cultural institutions, events, restaurants, etc.
  • Strong commitment to diversity and inclusivity in the workplace. Ability to present to diverse audiences, specifically, racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication, customer service skills, and the ability to convey information in a positive manner.
  • Keen attention to detail, the ability to coordinate multiple tasks and meet strict deadlines.

Hours & Pay

  • This internship will pay $15/hour for a maximum of 25 hours per week for 12 weeks total.
  • This is a paid internship and is eligible for academic credit as defined by the academic institution.
  • Work schedules will be determined by the supervisor and the intern, and will be during normal business hours, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit at desk, operate computer keyboard and view computer screen for six to eight hours per day.
  • Must be able to hear and converse via telephone and in person.
  • May be required to lift boxes and small equipment up to 50 pounds in weight.
  • Travel in personal automobile may be required for business.
