Graduate Assistant for Career and Life Design Center

Graduate Administrative Assistants(GAs) provide approximately 20 hours of service per week, over the course of a semester that are purely administrative duties. The Graduate Assistant (GA) for Career and Life Design Center is an Oakland University graduate student who works in the Career and Life Design Center. The GA, under the direction of the Director, is involved in a variety of projects, appointments, events, and workshops focused on supporting the Career and Life Design Center mission to provide innovative and comprehensive services empowering students and alumni to achieve lifelong career success. The Career and life Design Center strives to prepare students and alumni through activities such 1:1 resume review and interview preparation appointments, employer networking opportunities, and large scale events such as Career Fairs.  

Students with assistantships are expected to be enrolled as full-time students at Oakland University during the semester(s) for which they are appointed. Applicants must be enrolled in or pursuing admittance to (with plans for a Fall 2024 start) one of the following programs: Master of Organizational Leadership, Master of Arts in Communication, Master of Arts in Counseling, Master of Business Administration, Master of Education in Educational Leadership, Master of Education in Higher Education Leadership, or Master of Education in Teacher Leadership.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Supervision and Training of Career Ambassadors
  • Deliver training and offer continuous support to 10-12 undergraduate student employees (Career Ambassadors) through check-ins, observations, and evaluations
  • Manage and organize schedule of events for Career Ambassadors, including: student appointments, office hours, presentations, workshops, tabling, and training
  • Work closely with the Director to set goals for Career Ambassador Program and manage day-to-day operations
  • Conduct 1:1 appointments with students to review resumes and cover letters, provide career guidance, and provide mock interviews 
  • Support front office Career Studio by greeting students and providing in the moment guidance on resume formatting, cover letters, and career services resources
  • Deliver classroom presentations in small and large group settings to engage students in the career exploration process
  • Partner with Student Affairs division and university partners regularly
  • Conduct various Career and Life Design Center & OU events in effort to promote offerings to students and alumni
  • Support the staff in hosting career events
  • Assist with Career and Life Design Center events and other projects as assigned by Career and Life Design Center staff
