We provide real-world work assignments, which provide interns the opportunity to work side-by-side with professional City staff committed to teamwork and providing superior municipal services to the community of Santa Clarita.
SALARY:
$19.31 – 24.46/hour, Undergraduate Level
$25.77 - 30.92/hour, Graduate Level
This position is expected to work approximately 20-25 hours per week. The anticipated duration of the internship is approximately 6 to 12 months, but may end earlier or be extended depending on department needs.
DESCRIPTION/DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Conducts traffic field studies and observations
• Creates and updates records for multiple management systems in the City's Traffic Operations Center
• Updates and maintains the City's Traffic database
• Assists with traffic data analyses and signal performance measures
• Prepares charts, graphics, and illustrations for various presentations and projects
• Assists with the preparation of traffic signal, fiber optic, signing, and striping plans under the supervision of the Traffic staff
• Prepares inventory for City's Traffic Operations Center and field equipment
• Performs Intelligent Transportation System equipment software and firmware updates
• Prepares How-To instruction manuals for different equipment and systems
• Assists with general administrative support, as needed
The following skills, knowledge, and abilities are highly desirable:
- Strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing, including the ability to develop
comprehensive reports, general correspondence, and make presentations
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
- Excellent customer service skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Experience with Bluebeam and/or AutoCAD is desirable
- General understanding of governmental organizations and municipal operations
- Ability to foster effective working relationships with all levels of staff and the community.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to produce work that is accurate and complete
- Ability to lift, drag, and push files, paper, documents, and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds
- Strong computer skills and the ability to use Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint
EDUCATION:
If you are currently an undergraduate student, graduate student, or recent graduate with a field of study of Engineering, Urban Planning, or a related field, and are interested in gaining meaningful hands-on work experience at the local government level, this opportunity may be for you.

Part-time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) workers are at-will.
As a City of Santa Clarita public employee, you may be called upon to work as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW) in the event of an emergency (in accordance with Government Code §§ 3100-3109). Before entering upon the duties of employment, all public employees, except those excluded by law, take and subscribe to an oath or affirmation set forth in the California Constitution, declaring them to be Disaster Service Workers in time of need.
