Intern, General Counsel

The SPLC is seeking an Intern for our General Counsel's Office for the Fall of 2025!

The Southern Poverty Law Center's General Counsel Office is seeking a Fall intern that is an exceptional law student who possesses strong academic backgrounds, excellent research and writing skills, and a commitment to public interest law. The Intern will work closely with the General Counsel and their team in all subject matter areas. Interns will learn about the responsibilities of a General Counsel office and develop their legal writing skills, conduct research, review agreements and policies, and assist with organization and preparation of board governance materials.

Who You Are

Inquisitive. Possesses a demonstrated interest and past involvement in social justice issues.

Thorough. Ability to conduct in-depth research and high-level of attention to detail.

Analytical. Capable of breaking down research and presenting, either verbally or in writing, your findings.

Communicative. Must have exceptional writing and communication skills.

Proficient. Familiarity and proficiency in Microsoft Office suite is a must, specifically excel, outlook and PowerPoint.

What You'll Do

Assist with contract review, administration, and management;

Organize, review and prepare board governance materials;

Review and revise Center policies;

Research projects on a variety of Center-related topics;

Research and document Center history and archives;

Conduct legal research and writing on labor, employment, data privacy, intellectual property, and other compliance issues; and

Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification

Uphold our JEDI principles by helping to ensure we uplift the voices of underserved communities and center policy recommendations designed by directly impacted individuals.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently a 1L or 2L student enrolled at an accredited law school.

Compensation & Additional Information

Students are supervised by our Atlanta office staff. This position will be assigned to the Office of General Counsel and will provide support for Center objectives.

The Center pays $17.50 per hour. Interns are expected to work a minimum of 15 hours per week and there may be opportunity for supervisor approved overtime.

This internship is expected to begin August 4, 2025.

Where & How You'll Work 

This role the following work designations options:

  • Local Remote: Will work remotely, but is expected to attend work-related activities that occur at the SPLC offices or in the states in which the SPLC operates.
  • Telework: Will work at an SPLC office at least three days per week and may work two days per week from an alternative work location.

Other Special Considerations 

This job is performed under general office conditions and is not subject to any strenuous physical demands or dangerous conditions.
