Pharmacy Intern

REQUIREMENTS

  •     Must be actively enrolled in an accredited school of pharmacy program.
  •     Must have completed at least one year of pharmacy school and be in good academic standing.
  •     Must have a valid Michigan Pharmacy Intern license.
  •     An understanding of local, state, and federal laws and regulations that impact the practice of pharmacy. (ie. TJC, FDA, DEA, Board of Pharmacy, HIPAA, etc.)

SUMMARY

Work duties will be assigned depending on the level of schooling completion and competence achieved.   For example, a Year 1 Pharmacy Student intern will have more pharmacy technician or administrative job duties versus a Year 4 Pharmacy Student who has completed two years of clinical pharmacy services.  Each intern will be assessed by the Pharmacy Director and Preceptor to determine work duties based on knowledge and skill. Examples of work duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

·     Works under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist only.

·     Assists licensed pharmacy technicians with pharmacy technician functions as needed. May assist the pharmacist to provide clinical pharmacy consultation and documentation such as: drug information, pharmacokinetics, formulary substitutions per policy, detection and reporting of drug interactions, ADR reporting, and pharmacotherapy reviews, etc.

·     Proactively identifies issues and solutions to continuously improve upon patient safety, quality, or efficiency of pharmacy services.

·     Through the intern experience and pharmacy school education, continues to build an understanding of clinical and operational pharmacy/patient care systems and properly leverages HSS IT systems to evaluate pharmacotherapy.  This includes, but is not limited to pharmacy systems for order entry, verification, pharmacotherapy, electronic medical records, long term care chart reviews, clinical pharmacy services, laboratory analysis, drug ordering and billing, and other systems related to pharmacy services.

·     Processes over the counter product requests from HSS staff and HSS family members per policy.

·     May assist the pharmacist to provide in-services and orientation for Nursing, Medical, and Pharmacy staff as needed.

·     Actively contributes to staff meetings and Pharmacy Policy & Procedures as needed.

·     Acts as a positive representative of HSS in the community.

·     May assist the pharmacist in providing discharge medication counseling or medication reconciliation.

·     May prepare and deliver pharmacy oriented training to HSS staff as directed by preceptor.

·     Performs other duties as assigned by Pharmacy Director or preceptor.
