Purpose:
Stewards Individual Placements, a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. The Community Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) Program combines the strength of a national leader in conservation service with the National Park Service to train emerging leaders to assist park units in building lasting connections to communities.
Nestled between the bustling city of Los Angeles and the serene coastline of the Pacific Ocean, Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SAMO) offers a stunning natural escape characterized by its diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage. Spanning over 153,000 acres, this unique park features a blend of rugged mountains, lush canyons, and scenic coastal views, making it a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
The park is home to one of the last remaining Mediterranean ecosystems in the world, showcasing a remarkable variety of plant and animal species. Visitors can explore over 500 miles of trails that wind through the mountains, offering opportunities for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The park's diverse habitats support an array of wildlife, including deer, coyotes, and numerous bird species, providing ample opportunities for wildlife observation and photography.
SAMO is rich in cultural history, reflecting the diverse heritage of the region. The area has been inhabited by various Native American tribes for thousands of years, including the descendants of the present-day Chumash and Tongva peoples, who have a deep connection to the land. Evidence of their presence can be found in archaeological sites, rock art, and traditional cultural practices that continue today. In the late 18th century, Spanish explorers and missionaries arrived, leading to the establishment of missions and ranchos, with their influence evident in the architecture, place names, and agricultural practices that shaped the area. The 19th century saw the Santa Monica Mountains become a center for ranching and agriculture, with remnants of historic ranches still visible throughout the park. Additionally, the scenic landscapes have served as a backdrop for numerous films and television shows, contributing to the area's identity within the entertainment industry. The establishment of the park is part of a broader conservation movement aimed at preserving its unique landscapes and ecosystems, reflecting a growing awareness of the importance of protecting natural and cultural resources for future generations.
The park offers educational programs and interpretive exhibits that engage visitors with its natural and cultural resources, fostering a deeper appreciation for the environment. The Volunteers-In-Parks Program at Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area is a vital component of our efforts to preserve and enhance the park's natural and cultural resources. With a total of 645 position-based volunteers and 1,343 episodic volunteers, we have nearly 2,000 cumulative volunteers contributing to our mission. In the past year, these dedicated individuals have collectively contributed an impressive 51,459 hours of service across various areas, including 5,817 hours in administration, 25,109 hours in natural resources, 4,689 hours in interpretation and education, 994 hours in facilities management, and 14,850 hours in visitor and resource protection.
In our most recent fiscal year our program also facilitated community engagement through 147 group volunteer events, involving diverse organizations and initiatives such as National Trails Day, National Public Lands Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, and the City Nature Challenge. Collaborating with groups like the YMCA, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, California State University Channel Islands College Corps, Louisville High School, and the California Naturalist Certification Program, as well as specific projects like Xenopus Removal with AmeriCorps and Los Angeles Works, our volunteers play a crucial role in fostering stewardship and promoting environmental awareness within the community. Through their efforts, the Volunteers-In-Parks Program not only enhances the park's resources but also strengthens the connection between the community and the natural environment.

The Community Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) position at Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SAMO) plays a crucial role in enhancing the park's volunteer program and fostering community engagement. The CVA will assist in the administration of the volunteer program, focusing on outreach, recruitment, and event management. This dynamic role involves collaborating with diverse organizations and community groups to promote volunteer opportunities and organize group service events. The CVA will also contribute to the development of educational initiatives that connect visitors with the park's rich natural and cultural resources. Description of Duties:

Program Administration
- Assist in the administration and management of the Volunteers-In-Parks Program.
- Collaborate with volunteer supervisors and the park volunteer coordinator to ensure consistency and efficiency in volunteer management.
- Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for key tasks to ensure the long-term sustainability of the park's volunteer programs.

Volunteer Recruitment and Training
- Conduct outreach to local communities and organizations to promote volunteer opportunities.
- Coordinate outreach efforts to local universities, colleges, and retired individuals to enhance diversity and engagement in the volunteer pool.
- Recruit, train, and retain volunteers for various park programs and initiatives.
- Develop and enhance volunteer orientation processes to create a more engaging and immersive onboarding experience.

Event Coordination
- Organize and coordinate group volunteer events, including logistics and materials.
- Participate in the planning and execution of events such as the Monumental Conference and Volunteer Exchange Field Trips to support volunteer development and cross-organizational collaboration.

Community Engagement
- Work closely with park leadership and staff to support and implement community-focused initiatives, including tailored volunteer experiences for local groups.
- Monitor and evaluate volunteer activities, providing feedback and support to volunteers.

Record Keeping and Reporting
- Maintain records of volunteer hours, contributions, and program activities.
- Assist in the development of promotional materials and communications related to the volunteer program.

Professional Development
- Gain exposure to all aspects of park operations, including the activities of different divisions, to broaden professional development and career opportunities within the National Park Service (NPS).
- Participate in training sessions and professional development opportunities to enhance skills in volunteer coordination and community engagement.
Qualifications:
- College degree or high school diploma/equivalency certificate
- Possess a valid driver’s license from the state of residence, required for occasional travel to off-site events and community outreach activities.
- Availability to work weekends and selected holidays, with typical days off being Mondays and Tuesdays.
- Flexibility to work occasional evening shifts for special events is also required.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, essential for interacting with staff, volunteers, and visitors.
- Organizational skills to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and work independently in both administrative and field-based environments.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite or similar software, including proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software.
- Willingness to work outdoors, as the position involves some fieldwork, including outreach events and supporting volunteers on-site.
- Willingness to work as part of a team and independently.
- Ability to work with others, especially those from diverse populations.
- United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
- Applicants must be between ages of 18-30 years old, or up to 35 for veteran, based on Public Land Corps Act of 1993 authorizing this AmeriCorps opportunity.
- Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award.
- Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Managing large and small groups of people to accomplish priority work.
- Excellent communication skills, comfortable speaking in front of groups (10 to 100 people) to effectively communicate safety hazards and mitigation strategies through onsite briefings.

- Familiarity with the National Park Service or other government/public organizations.
- Experience in event coordination, outreach, or public speaking.
- Understanding of environmental conservation and stewardship, particularly in relation to public lands and historical sites.
- Familiarity with volunteer management software or databases.
- Interest in or previous involvement with Indigenous peoples' history and culture in relation to public lands.
- Local applicants from the Los Angeles or Ventura County.
- Experience in community outreach, customer service, environmental education, and/or outdoor recreation.

Physical Requirements:

Time Requirements:
- This position is expected to serve 40 hours each week, but exact service schedules may vary.
- Lunch breaks will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service.
- Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.
Orientation and Training:
- Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.
- Week-long, in-person training on NPS volunteer program management and leadership skills.

Additional Position and Community Information
The position requires a current driver’s license, a safe driving record, and a reliable personal vehicle, with weekend work expected on Fridays, Saturdays, and occasional Sundays, along with selected holidays, with typical days off being Mondays and Tuesdays. To support the professional development of the Community Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) member and help them grow as lifelong conservation stewards and future leaders, we provide a comprehensive array of training opportunities, including Operational Leadership Training, anti-harassment training, driver’s training, active shooter training, and health and wellness training. We foster a "no fear" environment, encouraging individuals to speak up if they feel unsafe, as work safety is taken very seriously. Immediate measures have been implemented in the past to ensure a safe working environment when incidents arise. Additionally, the CVA will have access to mentorship programs, workshops, and networking opportunities within the NPS and community organizations, enhancing their skill set and instilling a sense of ownership and commitment to conservation efforts.
By combining these training and certification opportunities with a strong support system, we aim to
cultivate the CVA’s leadership qualities and prepare them for future roles in conservation and community engagement. Our park is well-equipped to manage additional volunteers, thanks to a dedicated structure and experienced staff. The park’s Volunteers-In-Parks Program team includes a Volunteer Coordinator who previously served as the park's CVA for 2.5 years. The Interpretation, Education, and Volunteers-In-Parks Division includes a full-time Wildlife and Volunteer Program Technician, an Interpretation Program Coordinator, two Interpretation Park Guides, an Education Specialist, and education technicians. Furthermore, over 15 staff members have been supervising volunteers and interns for more than three years and have completed the "Volunteer Supervisor" training provided by PWR and the Volunteers-In- Parks team at SAMO. This experienced group forms our Volunteer Supervisory Team, ensuring effective oversight and support for volunteer initiatives, all backed by the Chief of Interpretation, Education, and the Volunteers-In-Parks Program, which enhances our capacity to successfully integrate and manage additional volunteers in our programs.
If housing is needed, the CVA will be residing in a dormitory shared with other staff or interns. Each dorm room features a single bed, and bathrooms, as well as communal areas (kitchen, living room, dining area), are shared. The dorms are equipped with central heating and air conditioning, Wi-Fi, free laundry facilities, and a fully stocked kitchen. The only items the CVA needs to bring are bedding (sheets, pillowcase, blankets) and towels for personal use. All dishes, utensils, pots, and pans are provided.
Both dorms are situated on park property, approximately a 15-minute drive from headquarters. A car is necessary for commuting between the dorm and HQ, as well as for grocery shopping and running personal errands. Major grocery stores and restaurants are just a 5-10 minute drive away. The area offers numerous recreational activities, including hiking, biking, running, and surfing. Being in an urban setting, there are plenty of shopping options, movie theaters, concerts, and other attractions within a 20-60 minute drive.

Evaluation and Reporting:
- As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.
- Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
